I am still having difficulty upgrading my database from
version 6. Could someone please provide me with a step by
step procedure to successfully acomplish this. I'll be
purchasing a new computer soon and I will want to purchase
the latest version of SQL Anywhere Studio.

I always suggest a dbupgrad and then a dbunload. The commands below assume
you are using v9 software :

dbupgrad -c "dbf=c:\v6.db;uid=dba;pwd=sql"
dbunload -c "dbf=c:\v6.db;uid=dba;pwd=sql" -an v9.db

You now have a new database called v9.db that has been upgraded.

I'm using the evaluation software. The first command
dbupgrad worked. I get an invalid databse when I try to run
the second command. Could this have something to do with the
transaction log?

What do you get when you try:

%ASANY9%\win32\dbping -d -c "dbf=c:\v6.db;uid=dba;pwd=sql;LOG=c:\log.txt"

Can you post the contents of "log.txt" ?

You posted that you are moving from ASA 6 to ASA 9. Why is ASA 8 being
used?

It's the evaluation version, Sysbase is calling it 9, but
yes everything seems to be 8.

It would appear that the dbupgrad worked, I just can't get
the dbunload to work, so I am unable to access the file in
Sybase Central.

So you have 8 and 9 installed on the same machine, correct?

If so, make sure that ASA 9.x directories are in the PATH environment
variable *before* the ASA 8.x directories.

Personally, I only have the 9.x directories in my PATH. I use a script
to flip between 7.x, 8.x and 9.x settings.

The problem with multiple versions in your PATH is that you may
inadvertently use a command from another version. For example,
"dbunload" and "dbupgrad" don't specify a version number in the command
so you are at the mercy of the PATH setting. Wherease "dbeng8" and
"dbeng9" are explicit about the version in use.

No I only have version 8, no 9.

Where did you get this evaluation version from? You might try
downloading the Developer Edition of 9.0.1 from our website:

http://www.ianywhere.com/downloads/sqlany.html

I suggest using the most recent version of ASA when upgrading from an
early version.

Hope this helps,

Along with what Reg posted, you'd likely benefit from a read of the
following section in the ASA 9.x online docs:

What's New in SQL Anywhere Studio
Upgrading Software and Databases
- Upgrading Adaptive Server Anywhere

Read the section over. Reg's post shows how to upgrade the entire
database file format (dbunload/reload), not just the "database" (dbupgrad).

Hope this helps,
