Hello group,
I am looking into Appeon for PowerBuilder because I want to transform an
already existing application made with PB and EAServer to a Web Based
application.
Reading through the manuals I found some cloudy spots that need to be
explained so here it goes:

1. The blob datatpe is not supported!. My application uses datastores in
EAServer and passes data using GetFullState/SetfullState to client dw. Since
the blob datatype is not supported it means that I cannot convert my
application? I tried to find a workaround in the manuals but I could'nt find
anything (I'll read them again).

2. I would also like to know about PFC's. My front end is fully made with
PFC's. I saw that Appeon uses ACF which is PFC specially tunned for Appeon.
How easy is to transform that into PFC. Are there any know problems or bugs
that may slow down the process?

3. Finally a question about licencing. We have set up an application for a
customer of ours that uses EAServer. He has CPU licence etc. If we are going
to use Appeon in order to create a Web Application for him that is based on
the already existing one, does he have to pay again in order to another
EAServer licence for Appeon? Is it possible to use his existing EAServer
with Appeon?

Thats all for now I will wait for your answers....

Kind regards
Dimitris Karistinos

Hi Dimitris,

Thank you for your interest in Appeon.

1) Appeon has a simple and effective workaround for DataWindow
GetFullState/SetFullState. Two standard user objects are provided in the
installation path of Appeon Developer: The appeondatawindow that inherits from
the PowerBuilder system DataWindow control, and the appeondatastore that
inherits from the PowerBuilder system DataStore object. Appeon Migration Guide
and Appeon Supported Features Guide have sections talking about how to use the
appeondatawindow and appeondatastore to pass data using
GetFullState/SetFullState. I attached the relevant section from Appeon
Migration Guide with this post for your reference.

2) ACF supports approximately 85% of all PFC 8 features. The work involved in
deploying a PFC application is far less than you expected. The standard way to
do it is: replace the PFC framework with ACF framework --> Perform a full build
on the application, clear all the compiling errors --> The application is ready
to be deployed with Appeon 2.7. Actually, PFC application deployment requires
less work than non-PFC application deployment of the same size. The debugging
work is done in the PowerBuilder IDE.

For license issue, please contact either appeon_sales@sybase.com, or call us at
888-8-SYBASE.

Hi Dimitris,

Just to add a couple things to Julie's response:

1) When we move Client/Server applications that are based upon the Windows
API to the Web World, we must play by the rules that are dictated by the
browser environment. The browser language (JavaScript) does not support blob
datatype and that is why we provide workarounds for easily passing result
sets (in all DataWindow Presentation Styles supported) using standards like
XML and Graphic Images. This also occurs with the GOTO PowerScript statement
(not recommended and easily worked around with IF THEN ELSE or CHOOSE CASE.
This is simply a lack of direct mapping between the Windows API and Web
Browser JavaScript worlds. However, as time goes on, Appeon releases may
employ more direct workarounds for these correlation issues.

2) For the PowerBuilder feature set, most developers only use a minority of
the features (maybe 25-35%). In the same fashion, many PFC developers only
use a minority of the functionality provided. So 85% of the PFC for the web
world is a pretty high percentage. Currently, the highest priority item
planned for a future release in both PFC and non-PFC of Appeon is the
implementation of the Error object.

Regards, Rex

Hello Julie,
Thank you for your direct response, it was really helpfull. I would also like to ask, if there is any evaluation copy of Appeon that I can have, in order to send it to our customers and promote the product. I searched through the Appeon site but I did not find anything. If there is a way please inform me.
