I haven't seen a "commitment" or feature list - although tentative bug fix
notes are available at

ASE 12.5.3 will be available in mid nov time frame.
It will have encrypted columns and cross platform dump and load
support.

This means that you can dump a database in Windows 2000 and load the
database in a Solaris for example?

cross platform dump is an enhancement request via ISUG: e01_176
You should have them update the status of this from 'under consideration' to
planned/implemented.

Hi,

I can hardly wait for a "developer's edition" of 12.5.3.  Any chance of getting it ?
It will be great to be able to take home a dump of the Solaris database, and restore it under Windows.

Yeah - we all take work home...but often times, you only want to grab a
table or two - or a few hundred rows rather than the full
100GB....here's a trick for you:

1 - Create a proxy database on your laptop/desktop

Syntax:
Create database <dbname>
on <datadev>=<size>, log on <logdev>=<size>, Â…
with default_location = “<server>.<dbname>.<own>.”
for proxy_update

Example:
create database graywolf_megaphone2
on datadev_01=10
log on logdev_01=10
with default_location "GRAYWOLF.megaphone2.dbo."
for proxy_update

** Note the ending "." after dbo

2 - Tune CIS for array inserts on the laptop/desktop

exec sp_configure "cis bulk insert array size", 10000
exec sp_configure "cis bulk insert batch size", 10000
exec sp_configure "cis cursor rows", 10000
exec sp_configure "cis packet size", 2048
--exec sp_configure "cis rpc handling", 1
-- If you will use more than 10 parallel threads for
-- extraction, you will need to bump this up as well
--exec sp_configure "max cis remote connections", 10

3 - Copy data from server to laptop/desktop

a - directly into tables with:

insert into <laptop_table>
select <cols> from <proxydb>.dbo.<tablename>
where <whatever conditions you want>

b - or first to raw table for speed (but not tempdb unless you are sure
you are going to first move the data to real tables prior to shutdown)

select <cols>
into <laptop_staging_table>
from <proxydb>.dbo.<tablename>
where <whatever conditions you want>

Since this uses array inserts, it is the same as doing a bcp->bcp from
server to server - but with the flexibility of doing where clauses,
joins, etc.

BTW, yes, this is doc'd - see ref manual or quick ref guide on create
database (one of those 'new' features that is overlooked). A bit of
history - this was first kinda done in 12.0 to support ASE/HA. Exposed
in 12.5.0 and exploited first by sybmigrate (utility to go from nK page
to mK page).
