Is there a way to search ianywhere.public.general for a
particular error?
I tried Solved Cases but it appears to be a fee service.

Yes but it is the client software that handles the search. For web based
searches, google can be used via google groups (
http://www.google.ca/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q= ). For newsreaders, see the help
for search methods. In Outlook Express, I use Edit | Find Message for basic
searches.

You can also post your question/problem here and someone may have that
answer.
