In an earlier post, Chris Grim states:

"The 5.5 server should support clients back to 4.2, so you
should be fine
with that mixed client base. The only place where matching
versions can be important is if you are using the XML data
conduit and the on-device JavaScript Avantgo database
objects."

I upgraded to 5.5 server and have 5.2 clients in the field.
I have been having difficulty sync'ing at all (it just hangs
at Connecting to :<my server name>:8092 )

sometimes the sync completes and my XML data conduits aren't
working properly.

can someone explain in more detail things to expect with the
mixed versions and if there are any workarounds? upgrading
all the clients to 5.5 could take 2 weeks or more.

Matthew,

The XML conduit changed a fair amount between 5.2 and 5.5, both on the
server and the client. If you are synching web only content, I would expect
it to work fine, but I would not expect the datastore to work correctly.
The main change was the addition of a primary key to the xsd. If your
xml/xsd doesn't have one and only one primary key, then you will definitely
have errors with the 5.5 server. In general, when using the database api,
you should use the same client and server version.

In a mixed client environment, client releases lower than
the server release should sync without problems. If your
users are getting stuck with synchronization, there may be
some configuration/network issues at play. I would recommend
that you work with Sybase Tech Support to get your issues
resolved as quickly as possible.

If you prefer using this newsgroup, can you provide
additional info on your current configuraiton, such as
device type, device OS, connectivity type (cradle or
wireless), sync server config (port conflict?) etc. I can
not guarantee I will have an answer for you, though.
