First off - I am a novice in over my head.

I am installing a COTS program by Carrier. As part of the
bundled package I got SQL Anywhere which is required for the
Carrier software to run. As I got to the SQL portion of the
install, it gave me several error messages:

Fatal error in database engine kernel
Database engine not running
Unable to read current database version; error = -1

After all this the InstallShield terminates by telling me it
can not continue - correct the error and run again.

Can anyone help me?

Since the SQL Anywhere install came as part of the bundle from Carrier, I
would recommend working with them first to try and resolve the issue. Should
the install be customized for their application in any way, then Carrier
will be in a better position than we are to support you.
