How to connect to a Informix 7 database from the datawindow.net designer
using ADO.NET?
In the DB Profile window the only namespace available is System.Data.OleDb.
Can I use System.Data.Odbc?

The ADO .NET driver uses OLEDB under the covers. If there is an OLEDB
driver for Informix 7 then you should be able to use that. You can
also use ODBC to connect to an Informix 7 database.

I've installed tht IBM Informix .NET Provider.
I have to use the namespace IBM.Data.Informix but it is not shown in the
ddlb.
How can I use this namespace to create a new connection to an Informix db
from the DW.NET designer?
It works fine from VS.NET, I can create the connection sucessfully.

I am using the Informix 9 drivers to connect to an Informix 7 db.
it works fine from PB 7 but from the DW.NET designer I get an error -217
(Column column-name not found in any table in the query (or SLV is
undefined).).
any ideas?

Does this mean you got past the issue of not seeing the namespace in
the dropdown list box when creating a connection profile?

Can you post the specifics of the connection you are attempting (cut
and paste from the Preview tab in the DataBase Profile dialog) and I
will set it up here to see if I also run into the problem.

Thanks.

I still cannot see the informix namespace , but that is for the ADO.NET
connection.

the other problem is using native driver for the informix db.

PB 7 connetion:
// Profile t
SQLCA.DBMS = "IN9 INFORMIX-9"
SQLCA.Database = "wdev_ods"
SQLCA.UserId = "dwspios"
SQLCA.DBPass = <************>
SQLCA.ServerName = "cap012@odscap12tcp"
SQLCA.AutoCommit = False
SQLCA.DBParm = ""

DW.NET connection:
' Profile cap012
SQLCA.Dbms = Sybase.DataWindow.DbmsType.Informix9
SQLCA.Database = "wdev_ods"
SQLCA.UserID = "dwspios"
SQLCA.Password = <************>
SQLCA.ServerName = "cap012@odscap12tcp"
SQLCA.AutoCommit = False
SQLCA.DbParameter = ""

Do you have any idea on what the SQL is that's generating the -217.
If you are seeing it on connect, try turning off the use of the
repository tables. You can do this within the Database painter (but
only after being connected) or you can edit the DW.INI file and change
the entry:

NoCatalog=No

to

NoCatalog=Yes

As for the ADO.NET connection, I may have misunderstood your original
question. Currently, we support only the System.Data.OleDb namespace.
I tried setting up a profile using ifxoledbc as the provider, but
could not get that working. If I specify a database, I get an error
about a multi-step oledb error, if I leave out the database, I get
just "No information available E-FAIL(0x80004005)". I don't usually
deal with Informix, so this is likely user error on my part.

in PB7:
I have a profile using Informix 9 native driver to connect to the database.
I can sucessfully connect to the database.
I can go to the db painter an see all table in my db and run any sql
I can create new datawindows.

in DW.NET designer:
a profile with the same config to PB 7.
I can sucessfully connect to the database.
I can go to the db painter an see all table in my db
BUT I can't run any sql (return error -217)
if I try to expand a table in the tree to see the list of columns I get the
same error.
I can create new datawindows, when I select a table I get the same error
BUT I can export the dw from pb7 and import in the dw.net designer and they
work fine (even the retrieve!)

in Visual Studio:
I am using the transaction object with teh same config as my db profile in
pb7 and in the dw.net designer.
I can run my application successfully.

obs.; the db already has the catalog tables.

so basicaly the problem is that I can't create new dw from the dw.net
designer.

In the ADO.NET fromt I will try to use the AdoTransaction with an Informix
connection (IBM.Data.Informix.IfxConnection), I just have one question can I
create an AdoTransaction set its connection to an Informix connection and
then open and close the connection every time I retrieve the data (to
release the connection back to the pool)?

Thanks
Silvio.

I am getting the error
"An unhandled exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred
in datawindow.dll
Additional information: Connection type:IfxConnectionis not supported now."
if I try this:

public class Engine
{
protected DataStore dsData;
protected IfxConnection conn;
protected AdoTransaction adoTrans;

public Engine()
{
conn = new IfxConnection("Host=*;Service=*;Server=*;User ID=*;
password=*; Database=*");
adoTrans = new AdoTransaction(conn);
dsData = new DataStore();
dsData.DataWindowObject = "d_eng_modl";
dsData.LibraryList = @"C:\Develop\dw.net\maintenance.net.pbl";
}

public DataWindowFullState GetData()
{
DataWindowFullState FullState = null;
try
{
conn.Open();
adoTrans.BindConnection();
dsData.SetTransaction(adoTrans); <<<< here I get the error
dsData.Retrieve();
FullState = dsData.GetFullState();
}
catch (Sybase.DataWindow.DbErrorException ex)
{
}
return FullState;
}

That's is weird 'cause IfxConnection implements IDbConnection!

This is not supported at this point. The only implementation of
IDbConnection that is supported is the one defined in
System.Data.OleDb

If the constructor of AdoTransaction expect as parameter an object that
implement the IDbConnection interface it should work with any object that
implement that interface so I believe that is a bug!

anyway, any plan for implementing it in a next EBF?

If you have a support plan, yes please do. The more customers

Go ahead and select beta, I'll check with the CaseXpress people as to
why that hasn't been updated yet.

Ok, I tracked down why this support is not there. It has to do with
the fact that the ADO.NET classes do not have built-in methods to
handle metadata queries. This is supposed to come in ADO.NET 2.0
though.

GetOleDbSchemaTable is available on OleDbConnection and that's what
DW.NET is using. For other ADO.NET namespaces though the metadata
queries will vendor-specific and possibly database-version specific
and this is just not work that was completed for the first release.

Ok, I thought you weren't connecting. There is definitely a bug here
in the native Informix driver and it's something we are seeing in
later builds of PB9 as well. We have reproduced it in house and are
fowarding it to engineering, but I don't really have workarounc for
you other than what you've already discovered or using ODBC/OLE-DB/or
ADO.NET (with System.Data.OleDb).
