I have had several reports from our users that once they install SQL
Anywhere 9.0.1.1841 on their server's with Veritas BackupExec version 9.x
will not run. We use BackupExec version 8.x and have not had any problems
doing our weekly backups. Are there a compatibility issues between SQL
Anywhere 9.0.1 and Veritas BackupExec 9.x?

Thanks,

Robert

This is a question that would be better addressed by Veritas support on what
other 3-party components (eg. database components) that is used in each
version of their product that might potentially conflict with ASA.

Some guesswork: Perhaps BackupExec is attempting to copy one of the
SQL Anywhere database or log files that are currently open. This is
not a good idea because such a copy will be invalid; only dbbackup can
make a backup of a running SQL Anywhere database. Perhaps the older
version of BackupExec could successfully create an invalid backup
copy, whereas the newer version fails for some reason. The solution
might be to tell BackupExec to skip these files, and only copy files
that were created by dbbackup... and then run dbbackup before starting
BackupExec.
...end guesswork :)

Good guess from Breck. A definite possibility without version 8.x working ok
being mentioned.

With the comment about no such issue happening in 8.x, this raises the
possibility of file conflicts, perhaps two dbsrv9.exe, dbsrv8.exe,
dbeng8.exe or dbeng9.exe are in the system. I'll leave it at that, as
Veritas is in a better position to comment on what software components were
being licensed in versions 8 and 9 with BackupExec.
