Pylon Details: Version 5.5.3 (latest update)

Mail Server: Exchange 2003

Server OS: Windows 2003

Client: XDA II (Pocket PC) - we use both Network Push and ReadySync.

Problem:

One of our users let his PDA battery drain and it hard reset (as they do) as
a result. I re-installed the software onto his device and now his device
errors when syncing INBOX and SENT ITEMS. It ReadySync's and pushes
calendar, contacts, tasks and notes fine.

When it first synched (via cradle - SyncExpress), after installing the
client software, it went as normal. Until, when it tried to copy over the
inbox and sent items to the device (client). You get the error shown in the
attached picture (says same thing on device).

Anytime you ReadySync you get the same error, although the e-mail referenced
may change. The device appears to receive (push) new e-mails fine.

What I have tried:

New install of client software on hard reset device.

Removed device from Pylon Anywhere and re-installed client software and
added device

Removed user from Pylon Anywhere system (user and device), then added
user (as if a new user) as you normally do, installed device etc.

None of these worked, got the same error message every time.

Hope someone can help me figure this out.

Dave:

This actually appears to be a data-related issue. If you hard reset the
device and install the Pylon Anywhere client and point it to a different
user's Pylon Anywhere account, do you see the same issue?

Can the original user sync to other devices?

If you remove the email referenced in the email message from the original
user's account, does the sync go smoothly? Or, does another bad email
surface? Are there any commonalities between the emails being flagged as
bad? From the same sender? Etc?

We want to try to narrow down the problem to data or device. By testing the
same device with a different user, and a different device with the original
user, we should be able to narrow that down.

Matt..

Sounds like a good idea, I'll give it a whirl and post what I learn.

Thanks

Dave:

After your hard reset, do you use an ActiveSync backup to restore the
settings of the device?

If so, can you try a hard reset without doing an ActiveSync restore?

In the past, I have seen ActiveSync Restores corrupt the Inbox/Outbox of a
device.

Thanks..

Matt..

We are using Sprite Backup Premium (most popular third-party backup app for
Pocket PC) to restore the Pocket PC, without the Pylon client installed.

As a test I was able to uncheck restoring mail and system databases and it
worked (twice). I would agree that there seems to be a problem as even if
the mail system is restored without the client software installed the client
fails, kinda strange when nobody else's client does this (failing after a
restore).

The ability to backup the Pocket PC in case of data loss or hard reset and
restore said device without technical support is critical. I cannot have our
users trying to communicate from god knows where (and when) with tech staff
about installing the sync client. Using the restore system we could have
their unit back up and running in three minutes without us having to assist
them (we put the restore into the hard reset build, XDA II).

The Systems Management add-on has a backup solution built in, does this fail
as well?

I cannot state how important finding a solution to this is.

I think the idea of not restoring the mail databases after a hard reset is
the best solution here.

Our Systems Management add-on's Backup and Restore capability doesn't back
up or restore the email/PIM information - - since this information is
already "backed up" on the mail server. We don't waste bandwidth backing up
this information, and when the user does their first sync after a restore,
they will get their email and PIM synchronized to their device.

Let me know if you have any questions on this.

Dave:

I did some more research, and found that there may be another solution here.

The error from your screen shot can occurr because attachments have
previously been set to be stored on a removable storage card. This setting
is preserved even after the storage card is removed. The inbox on the device
will no longer be able to read or save attachments.

The resolution is to temporarily replace the storage card, and, in the
Inbox, go to Tools / Options / Storage Tab. Uncheck "Store attachments on
storage card". Then remove the storage card, if desired.

Any chance after the hard reset that your storgae card is removed or in a
bad state? Is the Inbox on the device configured to store attachments to the
storage card? Is this setting affected by restoring/not restoring email
after a hard reset?

On a related point, trying to understand...

When you install the Pocket PC client (via Activesync) it also installs
software onto the desktop and adds it to the STARTUP folder.

What does this software do and is it required?

This client software will make sure that ActiveSync doesn't try to sync
Inbox/Calendar, etc. For Palm devices, the client software also provides the
HotSync conduit.

If you are only using a PPC connected to that PC, you can delete this
software by removing 'Pylon Anywhere Client' from Add/Remove programs.
