I'm assuming you mean 'creating functions in SQL' ? (creating functions that
map to a Java class is possible with the 'create function' statement since
12.5; and in a slightly different way since 12.0).
Granted, creating your own functions in SQL would be tremendously useful --
I'm all in favor of it.

According to ISUG Enhancement Request e01_274 (November, 2003) Sybase plans
to implement this feature. They do not say with which release.

Talking about that for years why not just buy it from Microsoft :-),
instead of putting efforts to all that Java implementations.
Looks like Sybase just could not make changes to the core for
some reason trying to catch-up with definitely less necessary innovations.

Less necessary to you - more important to others.....of course if you
bought it from MS you'd have to live with an OS that you had to reboot
nightly ;)

But seriously - vote for it in the ISUG enhancements request - like many
others, I would like to see this feature too - but when more people vote
for cross-platform dump/load than SQL UDF's, guess what gets done first???

Some info with regards to these requests.

e01_176 (cross-platform dumps) was listed prior to March, 2002. (There is
no submit date for e01_176; e01_196 is the oldest request with a date -
which is 3/2002.) The votes were Needed:7; Recommended: 10, and Undecided:
2.

e01_274 (UDF's) was listed in November, 2004. The current votes are Needed:
21; Recommended: 1; and Undecided: 1. This certainly appears to be a clear
mandate to me. I don't see any other request that "pings" as high as this
one in the voting. I suspect that the catch is that this request is about
two years (?) newer than the one for cross-platform dumps and it is a Sybase
resource-hours question.

There were also older requests (9310_18 and 9410_09) that appear to be the
same or very similar. The Sybase response for the latter was to use JAVA
functions. There is no information available on the voting (at least to me
there isn't).
