Upgraded to patch 8.0.3 on ASA. Backup works in Ent Mgr but
.bat
file for backup gives database invalid error. Code for
backup is:
dbbackup.exe -y -x -c "uid=dba;pwd=pwd;dbf=D:\production.db"
d:\backup\full
The server for the database is running according to Env Mgr
and also the Services directory. Any clue why I am
receiving this error?

This command line:
dbbackup.exe -y -x -c "uid=dba;pwd=pwd;dbf=D:\production.db"
d:\backup\full

does not specify the engine name or the database name. If the database
file production.db ir already loaded on an engine with a name other than
"production" and/or the database is loaded on an engined named "production"
but with a database name other than "production" then you would fail to
connect to the database using this command line.

Questions:

1) Are you sure that the database is not started when you attempt to run
dbbackup?
2) If the database is already started when you attempt to run dbbackup, then
what is the engine/server name? What is the database name?
3) Are you able to start the database using dbeng8/dbsrv8?

This syntax worked in 8.0.2. Why would it not work in
8.0.3? I can start the database from the command line ok.
Backup works in Sybase Central from utilities.
This command line:

Under the right conditions that command line would work in 8.0.3 just as it
has in every version from 5.0.0 (at least) on up. That is why the questions
I asked are trying to clarify why, in this instance, it is failing. I
previously outlined 2 specific scenarios in which you could expect that
command line to fail to connect to the database. Have you had a chance to
investigate those scenarios?

I created a new Network Database Server service and named it
to match the database. Stopped and dropped the old one.
Started the new one. Reconnected the database. I tried the
syntax that is in the documentation for backup utilities:
(dbbackup =c "eng=production;dbn=production;uid=DBA;pwd=SQL'
temp ) and get database not found. When I add the datafile
name (dbf=d:\production.db) I get the invalid database error
again. What do I need to add? the parameters that are on
the Configuration page of the Service Properties??
