I wanted to give everyone advanced warning that the start of the Beta
for DataWindow .NET 1.5 will be delayed until December 3rd, 2004. The
development team needs a few more days to do some testing on some late
changes.

I know that you are all eager to start testing the new version of
DataWindow .NET and we apologize for the delay. We hope this four day
delay to the start of the Beta will not be an inconvenience to you.

Regards,
Dave Fish

Is there anything available now to read about what functionality
datawindow.net will support in webforms? All I could find was information
regarding version 1.0.

Thanks,

Bob

I'm not sure what documentation will be made available with the Beta
so I will attempt to provide some insight into the webforms
functionality offered in DataWindow .NET 1.5. Please note that this is
subject to change and is only being provided to give customers an idea
of what they can expect. Standard disclaimers apply.

DataWindow .NET 1.5 will allow developers to use DataWindows on their
webform applications (ASP .NET). You will be able to drag and drop Web
DataWindow controls from the toolbox onto a webform. You will then be
able to assign the librarylist property and set the DataWindowObject
property for the DataWindow. The following DataWindow styles will be
supported on webforms:

Freeform
Tabular
Grid
Label
N-Up
Crosstab
Graph

We are working on adding support for Composite and Nested Report
DataWindow styles but they will not be supported in the initial Beta.

Developers will be able to use a transaction object to connect to the
database. The same transaction object functionality found in
DataWindow .NET 1.0 will be available on webforms in version 1.5.

Developers will be able to write code in their .NET language of choice
in the code behind. Several server side DataWindow events will be
available such as beginRetrieve, beginUpdate, SQLPreview, itemError,
RowRetrieved, etc.

Developers will also be able to code client side events in Javascript.
Some examples of these client side events are: ClientEventClicked,
ClientEventItemChanged, ClientEventItemError,
ClientEventRowFocusChanging, and ClientEventRowFocusChanged.

Developers will be able to save and retrieve DataWindow data using the
SaveDataCache and RetrieveDataCache methods. This will allow
developers to work with data without having to re-retrieve the data
from the database.

Developers will have the ability to specify how the DataWindow will be
rendered. Choices are HTML, XHTML, and XML.

Graph DataWindows will be supported. Graphs can either be generated as
temporary .jpg files or streamed from the server to the browser. The
streaming method will require more memory resources on the server than
the temporary file method, but developers won't have to worry about
the server becoming clogged with temporary files (or with writing a
routine that removes the temporary files after a specified period of
time).

Developers will have the ability to limit the number of rows displayed
on a page. 0 (the default) means all rows in the DataWindow will be
displayed in the generated web page. This option is useful if you wish
to allow a user to page through a large result set.

Datastores are also supported, as are Drop Down DataWindows.

In short, the functionality will be similar to how web DataWindows can
be used today in a JSP application. The major difference is that
EAServer is not required to host the DataWindow engine or PowerBuilder
runtime.

DataWindow .NET 1.5 will come with code examples so a developer can
quickly see how to use DataWindow technology in an ASP .NET
application.

Dave Fish

Not yet. The Beta will start next week and we hope to have a GA
release sometime in Q1 2005. The more people who Beta test the product
and report issues, the better quality the release will be.
