hi.
How can I modify the control type of a col in a dynamic dw control (type is
a Grid).

eg: If I have a dg type I would like one of the col be a chk box, and the
other one be a Drop col.

thx

Let's say that you want to change the 7th column in the DataWindow to
a check box. After dynamically creating the DataWindow you would use
the Modify method to alter the edit style. The code might look
something like this (in C#):

//Set column #7 to Checkbox style
string colStyle; //String containing the column edit style information
string modCol; //Modify statement to be applied to the DataWindow col.
string columnName; //Name of the column you want to modify

colStyle = "#7.Name";
columnName = DwcDynamic.Describe(colStyle);

//First, set the edit style (use No if you don't want 3D)
modCol = columnName + ".CheckBox.3D = Yes";
DwcDynamic.Modify(modCol);

//Set the Text for the Checkbox (default to right of check box)
modCol = columnName + ".CheckBox.Text='Benefits'";
DwcDynamic.Modify(modCol);

//Specify what value will show the checkbox as checked
modCol = columnName + ".CheckBox.On='Y'";
DwcDynamic.Modify(modCol);

//Specify what value will show the checkbox is not checked
modCol = columnName + ".CheckBox.Off='N'";
DwcDynamic.Modify(modCol);

There are other properties you can set as well. The best way to find
what is available is to use the DataWindow Syntax tool in DataWindow
Designer. Click on the New toolbar button and then select the tool
tab. Double click on the DataWindow Syntax icon to launch the utility.

Next, select the Syntax menu and select Modify\Attributes. In the drop
down select Column. You now see all of the properties that can be
modified using the Modify method.

This tool will also identify the properties to modify to make a column
either a Drop Down List Box or a Drop Down DataWindow.

I should point out that this process should become easier with version
1.5 as it adds dot notation to allow you to directly access many of
these properties without having to use the Describe or Modify methods.
If you are dynamically creating DataWindows though you would still
need to use Describe and Modify as you need to get the generated
column names before you can apply any action to them.

Dave Fish

thanks it worked perfect!.

I have to ask you this... Are there any books comming with the
datawindow 1.0+ where you learn all these Properties.

It is a big minus on documentation (It is fare what you have in helps
but no enough).

For all of you PB guys (from many yaers ago) might be that all this is
very easy to understand and follow; but there is a big probability that
many new people will start jumping (from vs.net if they dont do a better
chg in 2005)and desing with this piece of beatiful and easy tool
Datawindow Control. Congratulatios to all of you people.

Make sure you book mark this URL:
http://sybooks.sybase.com/dnetg0100e.html

It is a link to the online manuals. That along with the help files and
Intellisense should go along way to getting you up to speed. Of course
this newsgroup is also a great resource.

thanks:
one tip/sugestion...I see that you have some "how to" at the end
of this posting...would be nice that your signature for this forum will
have a How to Link to a page where all these goodies could be placed.

That's a good suggestion. There is CodeXchange with the code examples
and I do blog (when I can find the time) on the TeamSybase site. I'll
see if we can set up a FAQ, How To site.
