Is a column selected from the database but then deleted as a 'column' for
display not an object?

I am getting argumentExceptions from GetObjectByName if the column has been
selected from the database but isn't displayed as a column. ie) A Primary
key that is selected but not shown.

If this is the expected behaviour (makes a bit of sense if it relies on a
visible / created object) then is the 'best' way to get the type of column
by doing a describe(col.colType)?

I had written a big switch statement to handle all the DataType.xxx
enumerations... but I think now I have to go with the datawindow column
types of CHAR, DATE etc...

Any suggestions?

Yes, your explanation is spot on. the GOB acronym on the classes,
stands for GraphicObject, so if it's not on the DataWindow layout,
it's not a GOB. You could alternatively make those fields invisible
and then you'd be able to use the GOB methods.
