We are doing an eval of Appeon for our application. The app
is pretty large with 51 PBL's and about 400 data windows.
All looks to be configured correctly, and the demo's all
seem to work, but when we try to Preview a Window, run the
Feature Analysis Rpt or Deploy, the CPU pegs out and XP
quits responding at exactly 90% on the status bar every
time.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Hi Scott,

Before you deploy the application with Appeon, please full build the application in PowerBuilder. This can save some time and resources when Appeon Developer analyzes the objects in the application.

Analyzing all objects in the PowerBuilder application is the first task that Appeon Developer performs for Preview, Feature Analysis and Deployment.  Because your application is so large (51 PBLs and about 400 DataWindows), such object-analyzing task is very CPU and memory intensive.

We have the following suggestions on improving the situation:
1) Use the Appeon Xcelerator deployment for deploying your application.  This deployment method is available in Appeon 2.8 Enterprise Edition. Please check with your sales contact whether you are having a Trial edition of Appeon 2.8 Enterprise Edition, or a different edition.

2) Use a more powerful machine for hosting Appeon Developer.  For example, use a computer that has more than 1GB RAM, and Intel P4 1.8GHz CPU or above.

3) Simplify the application.  It is strongly recommended that you deploy the application in stages: first start with one or two modules (with other modules commented out), and then continue with more modules.

Hope it helps!

Julie Jiang

Julie,

Thanks for the response. We did a full build with the
latest EBF of PB 8.0.4. It all seems to process correctly
before stalling at the 90% state. I left the server running
last night on the process and it never completed, so I feel
pretty confident that there is something more to it.

We are running the Enterprise edition and Xcelerator, so I'm
not sure what more we can do. This is just doing a preview,
so my question is, does Appeon parse the entire app, even if
only previewing one screen?

Thanks again.

Hi Scott,

When Appeon Developer does a preview, it exports all the objects in the
application to RAM, and then parses the specified object. For previewing an
object, Appeon Developer does not parse the entire application.

The size of RAM needed for keeping the exported objects depends on the size
and complexity of the application. Therefore, if the application is large
and contains complex inheritance and nesting, but the free RAM available at
the computer is not sufficient, Appeon Developer will be unable to perform
the preview or deployment job. As mentioned in the last email, our standard
recommendation for the size of free RAM is 1Gb. But if your application is
very complex, the size should be even higher.

One method for you to check whether the RAM at your computer is sufficient
is: when Appeon Developer preview process stalls at 90%, check the Windows
Task Manager, and see whether the CPU and memory are almost fully occupied.

We would like to have more information about your application, so to give
you more assistance. You can directly send the information to my email
address:
1) Complete version number of PowerBuilder (I understand you are using
PowerBuilder 8.0.4. What is the small version number?)
2) The size of all the PBLs added together
3) Does the application use any framework, such as PFC framework?
4) Detailed environment information (Operating System, IE version, EAServer
version, type of the database)
5) Hardware settings at the computer (CPU, RAM, etc.)

Regards,
Julie

Julie,

Again, thanks for your response. We did finally get the
application to deploy. In total, it was over 4 hours of
processing time. We'll review our development machine and
probably make a change there.

Thanks for your help.
