Hi, I would need some help with the following topic:
(I do not really have any knowladge in sybase.)
We are running 3 database servers on the same physical
hardware, each of them have two databases.
All databases are around 1 GB. The server is a DL360G4 with
2 processors, and 2GB memory.
Sometimes the backup is successful, but it happens around
only 1 time from 10...
file versions:
Dbsrv7.exe version: 7.0.4.3396
Dbvalid.exe version: 7.0.4.2788
Dbbackup.exe version: 7.0.4.2788

we are running the following commands:
dbvalid -f -c "dsn=CZ_PDA_CON"
>>C:\Backups\bin\logs\SybaseBACKUP_CZ.txt 2>&1
If it is done successfully, then
dbbackup -x -y -c "dsn=CZ_PDA_CON" "C:\Backups\CZ\CZ_PDA"
>>C:\Backups\bin\logs\SybaseBACKUP_CZ.txt 2>&1

Can you please advise what can be the problem?
The databases are stored on storage, and we are creating the
backup files on the storage as well…
Even if the backup is successful it takes hours to complete!

Thanks for your answers
Imre

What happens 1 out of 10 times?
Which command is failing?
What is the exact error message?
What OS and version/service pack level are you running on?

You haven't described the problem.

What do you mean by "the databases are stored on storage" ?

> Even if the backup is successful it takes hours to complete!

If you have the ability to shut down the database engine for the backup,
then simply copying the .db and .log files will be significantly faster
than dbbackup.

there is no error message, it just stops, and I have to kill
it...

windows 2000 server with SP4

backup hangs and there is no error...

SAN, so not on local disks but this shouldn't make any
sense... just it is faster than local disks...

How do you know that it isn't still processing things?
How long are you waiting before killing it?
When this "hang" happens, is the database engine running and allowing
client connections?

If so, can you connect using DBISQL and run the administrative
procedures sa_locks() and sa_conn_info() to determine if a client has
locked some rows (thus preventing the validation and/or backup from
continuing). This is what I suspect is happening. The "hang" is
actually a block on a lock.
