I have created an AEP that works fine when the AEP DataConn and ParamsConn
are pointed to an Alias that is a remote server. The host application is
also pointed to this remote server.

When I change the Alias to be an internet IP address I get error 5004 saying
that it can not find the file or I don't have rights. The user settings do
show rights to the AEP.

I've tried changing the AEP connections to point directly at the dictionary
without success.

Server is Windows XP running Advantage version 6.2. I am using Delphi 5.

Thanks,

Andrew

"When I change the Alias"

Which one, the application's alias or an alias you are using for one of the
AEP connections?

I haven't written a v1 AEP in a long time, but I think you can leave the AEP
connection set to remote server, not ais.

Since I am developing on the machine that hosts the server, the alias was
initially the same for both. I tried specifying the ConnectPath in the AEP
and limited the AEP connection types to local and remote without success.

The tutorial shows the AEP DataConn set to local. Should an AEP only be set
to local or should it be only set to remote so that the database can be
shared with other remote/AIS connections?

you should not use the ALIAS in the AEP itself. Better pass in the UNC
path to the database (UNC path contains
servername/share/folders/dictionary.add) as an INPUT parameter for the
AEP.
The function parameters contain username and password to connect.
Leave the connection type on remote if you don't want to support local
server (otherwise it'll interfere with the ADS already having the same
tables opened).

A better approach would be to switch to ADS 7.x and use AEP interface
version 2. Much easier to handle...and still supported after 8.0
release.

Joachim,

I hope your not saying that the Version 1.0 AEP will not be supported in the
future. We have been forced to use it with VO for stability and have much
software depending on it.

V1 AEPs will be supported in future, but ADS 6.x will not.
