Which source control products work in WorkSpace?

I am specifically interested in which ones work well in both
PowerBuilder 10 and WorkSpace.

There's always CVS - www.cvshome.org Subversion is also open-source.

For PB, you'll need the 3rd-party plugin that implements the SCC API. Tortoise is one (http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/)
and then there's PushOK (www.pushok.com)

Carol,

WorkSpace supports a large list of source control products take a look at:
http://www.eclipse.org/community/index.html

And select "repository providers" in the left hand column.

Well, I took the "index.html" off the link and... boy am I grateful to
discover that VSS is on the list. Thank you very, very much for this
resource! (VSS ended up getting chosen for the PB end of things. Don't
ask - we're very low on resources around here and we had someone say, "I
can make that work," so we ran with it. I will admit that it is working
and doesn't crash unless you get really impatient!)

Thanks a whole bunch,

-carol

The plugins. The problem is the difference in "approach" between the two styles of SCC operations.

Most SCC systems (PVCS, ST, ClearCase) are designed to force you to checkout an object to your local workspace (and lock
it exclusively) before you can change it. During the time you have it locked and are actively editing it, nobody else
can have it (unless you want to start branching). When you check it in, you're ensure that YOUR changes are the only
ones included since the last checkin.

CVS, SubVersion, and the "newer" tools don't bother with the "lock exclusive" part - a checkout operation is nothing
more than bringing down the local copy. While you're making your changes, anybody else can ALSO grab that same object
and start their edits. The "checkin" operation is where you merge your changes with whatever happens to be at the tip
revision. Great for concurrent development, because nobody locks objects.

So, let's say I check out an object and held it for 2 weeks. In that time, you grab the same object and completely gut
it, and check that in. When it's time for me to check my changes in, it's up to ME to figure out how to merge my
changes with yours, which I didn't even know existed until my editing and debugging was complete.

PB's SCC integration was designed in the 1st style, where it expects to do a LOCK EXCLUSIVE during the checkout step. I
don't think the plugins for CVS and SubVersion were implemented to support that traditional style of configuration
management - that's why I had little success with them from within PB. The vendors of those plugins claim to have them
working well, but I'd need to see it with my own eyes...

Paul:

Hm. I remember working with CVS at one point, and there is a way to
tell CVS to move to "exclusive" access of a component. This was in a
GUI development tool, so I would have to research the back end way this
was accomplished - but I do remember having to force CVS to "unlock" a
component that was stuck and having it yell when I attempted to modify a
component.

I'll go dig around and see what I can find out.

Yeah, I could never any of these to work well... Some folks are claiming success though - I just never personally
experienced it.

I don't believe it for a second. We've worked with both of those and they
don't work at all. We've established a relationship with the guys at PushOK
but as you can imagine, they aren't jumping at the PB marketplace with any
real enthusiasm. We wish they would because we really like SVN but there's
only so much you can do.

Carson,
regarding PB with puskok:
Issues we are currently facing are slowness due to the fact you need
powerful server to make source control work.

The defaults for "Preset for Powerbuilder" doesn't include check server for
status & its other two check boxes checked. I have requested puskok to make
them as default for PB.

If you could tell what issues you do have, it would be interesting to know
with PushOk.
We have just started implementing PushOk with CVS.

Other than that, the real problem is with PB not updating the PBG file when
I add a new object (PB 10.2.0.7516) is an existing problem that we are
dealing with.

I use VS2003 with CVS & PushOk & haven't seen any problems at all.

thanks
vsv
