I just downloaded and installed the version 8.0 Advantage .NET Data Provider
and TDataSet descendants. Now when I open Delphi 8 (Enterprise) I get the
following message from the Borland Data Provider: "File or assembly name
Borland.Data.Advantage, or one of its dependencies, was not found." After
that comes the error message "Object reference not set to an instance of an
object".

I can find no Borland.Data.Advantage.dll, or any other file beginning with
Borland.Data.Advantage, on my system. What do I need to do to get rid of
this error message?

Further question: I find Advantage components AdsCommand, AdsCommandBuilder,
AdsConnection and AdsDataAdapter in the General category on the tool palette
when I'm designing a Windows Forms Application in D8. But I don't find any
Advantage components when I'm designing a VCL Forms Application in D8. Is
there a version of the TDataSet descendent, or something like it, that I can
use when creating Win32 apps in D8 (and beyond)?

Final question: I've also got the Delphi 2005 (Architect) demo version. I
find no Advantage components available for either WinForm or VCL Forms
applications. Can I get Advantage components working with D2005?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm at BorCon and trying to evaluate my
needs -- before the conference and accompanying product discounts end, I
hope!

I'll see you (someone) at the Advantage booth once it's open, no doubt.

You need to download and install "Advantage Data Access Components"
(ADAC.EXE).

Kay... I downloaded and installed ADAC.EXE. Now when I open D8, I get this:
"Failed to load C:\Program Files\Extended Systems\Advantage
8.0\TDataSet\Delphi8\dotNET\Advantage.Vcl.AdsD80d.dll.
C:\Program Files\Extended Systems\Advantage
8.0\TDataSet\Delphi8\dotNET\Advantage.Vcl.AdsD80d.dll is not a Delphi
package/assembly"

What next?

...followed by:
Borland Data Provider: There was an error reflecting type
'Borland.Data.Advantage.AdpConnectionString'.
Error: Object jeference not set to an instance of an object.

BUT (yay!) there *are* Advantage VCL components in D2005 now, I'm happy to
say. So we're definitely on our way somewhere better.

Hi Stephen,

If you are considering building an application with Delphi 8 I would
recommend reconsidering. Delphi 2005 would be a much safer bet.

Yes yes. Inspired by BorCon I just installed the D2005 demo and that's
actually the reason I wanted to get the components working in D8 -- so I
could play with real projects in both and compare. I'm beginning to think I
won't bother. D2005-6 is clearly so far superior that there isn't much point
spending a lot of time with D8.

Thanks for your help.
