Hi,
I build a dynamic sql query in a stored procedure and in
it I open a cursor using the dynamic query. My question is,
IS there a way to transfer(FETCH) a cursor into to a table
(could be a temp table) instead of looping through the
curosr. Since the query may return

version details below.
Adaptive Server Anywhere 9.0.2
Sybase Central 4.3.0

This stored procedure gets called from JSP, so the stored
procedure should return a resultset of a table(which
contains the data from the cursor opened using the dynamic
sql)

Thanks in advance,
Sowmini

You can use an INSERT ... FROM SELECT statement to copy rows from a query
into a temporary or base table. Look in the help index under "insert
statement" - Syntax 2 of the INSERT statement in particular.

Thanks for the reply but, I guess I was not clear on my
message.
Following is what I need to do,

1. I need to build a dynamic query.
2. To execute this dynamic query I need to have a cursor
opened using this query.
3. From this cursor I have to transfer data to a table.
4. I select data from the table and I am done,

I know a way to fetch values from a cursor, by looping thru
records in a cursor. I was wondering if there is a way to
bypass looping and do a bulk insert from this cursor.

If I go with your way, I would have execute the dynamic
query, and with the current sybase version that I have I
don't think I can do!!!.

my verison details below in my initial message

any help would be appreciated.

It wouldn't be a cursor in that case. A cursor implies that you are
positioning the row read in a sequence (i.e., row by row) rather than a
bulk resultset.

Are you sure that you cannot solve this problem using an EXECUTE IMMEDIATE?

Great!!! thanks again for responding. I used EXECUTE
IMMEDIATE, my error now is
ASA Error -267: COMMIT/ROLLBACK not allowed within atomic
operation

I have no clue what this error means or how I can get rid of
this. I get this error only from JSP. meaning, when I
execute this proc from Sybase Central, the proceudre runs as
expected.

Thanks in advance,
Sowmini

Throw us a bone here. Caa you post the the details of the code that you
have written. It sounds like you have a implicit commit or rollback
(i.e., a DDL statement).

Do you suppose it is a CHAINED on-versus-off issue? Of course, we need
to see the code as well :)

Thanks for responding. I tried EXECUTE IMMEDIATE. but I get
following error message from JSP

ASA Error -267: COMMIT/ROLLBACK not allowed within atomic
operation

I don't know what this message implies. I get this message
only from JSP, meaning the procedure runs as expected.

I am using JConnect5 from JRUN to Sybase.

Thanks in advance,
Sowmini

Thanks for responding. I tried EXECUTE IMMEDIATE. but I get
following error message from JSP

ASA Error -267: COMMIT/ROLLBACK not allowed within atomic
operation

I don't know what this message implies. I get this message
only from JSP, meaning the procedure runs as expected.

I am using JConnect5 from JRUN to Sybase.

Thanks in advance,
Sowmini
