I am not a developer, I am an end user of a piece of
software that uses the sql anywhere engine. We are having
serious performance problems, with this application, and
have not got resolution from the vendor. A quick look at the
performance monitor in Windows Task Manager, shows a
perfect sin Wave of the cpu usage going from 0 to 100%
utilization about every 10 seconds. The process doing this
is dbsrv7.exe. The network utilization monitor shows a
coresponding increase of network traffic of 1% at the same
interval.

We've upgraded and replaced the Computer where the app runs,
with no difference. The big clue here is that if we leave
the network disconnected, the sin wave goes away and
performance is good.

Any clue what might be going on?

Ask the vendor if they are executing some code that touches the DB in a
pattern similar to the problem that you are seeing?

Can you confirm the version and build of ASA7 (the output of the
following command line call: dbsrv7 -v)?

Are you able to adjust the engine start parameters? If so, you can add
request level logging to see if a pattern of calls is being made. I
would advice you to get the vendor to work with you on this as they
should be facilitating here.

There is no ouput from the command. I tried several times,
and then checked the process manager, to find several new
instances of dbsrv7 running. I did find a readme file in
the program directory that says it is version 7.0.2:

Adaptive Server Anywhere Version 7.0.2
UltraLite deployment option Version 7.0.2
MobiLink synchronization Version 7.0.2
SQL Remote replication Version 7.0.2
InfoMaker Version 7.0.2 (not
updated from 7.0.1)
Open Client/Open Server Version 12.0 EBF 8879
PowerDesigner PhysicalArchitect Version 7.0.2 (not
updated from 7.0.1)
jConnect for JDBC Version 4.2 and 5.2
EBF 9007
PowerDynamo Version 3.5.0.3
Sybase Central Version 4.0.1

The only mechanism I see for starting anything, is an entry
in the Startup Folder in the Startmenu. This is starting a
program called sybase.exe, with no command line options.

The vendor tried and failed to replicate this problem with
our databases on their system. We may end up paying for
support to come on site, but I want to exhaust any other
avenues first.
