Hello - I'm in process of installing a new M-Biz Web Pro
server - I've gon through the admin doc, the user guide,
searched the forum(s) and googled the web - there is
surprisingly little info on "Enabling M-Business Server for
RIM Wireless" - specifically on the issues of getting a SRP
identifyer (7 characters) and SRP authorization (49
characters) -

- I was under the impression that out of the box, M-Biz was
capable of running on web enabled blackberry devices - there
may be qualifications on model, device os level, memory etc,
but that in general, it would run on a blackberry device -

- it seems there are AvantGo clients for the backberry
devices -

the M-Biz UI has a link to download/install the client and
some notes about wireless sync'ing troubleshooting, but they
all point back to the SRP id/auth keys -

- how does this work and is there a reference to enabling
this? -

- don't tell me that it needs to be coordinated with
Enterprise IT people, or with the RIM technical contact
people - it will never work that way in our systems as this
is a departmantal M-Biz server that is run inspite/despite
the obstacles put up by the Enterprise IT people -

thanks for any pointers to more info on the process needed,

chris o.

MBA currently only supports the 957 blackberry devices. You need a BES and
an SRP from RIM.

So AvantGo does (https://my.avantgo.com/register/rim_finish.html) but M-Biz

The AvantGo client also only supports the 957. Trust me, Enrico knows.
He's been around this newsgroup for a while now.

The URL you posted is for use of the AvantGo-for-Blackberry service,
which is a server side gateway to AvantGo channels. It is not a RIM
client...it simply leverages the RIM browser. The "software" you
download installs a web link to your Blackberry desktop.

[BTW: A belated Happy Anniversary to Enrico! It has been just over a
year since his first post!!]

- I don't use a BB, but othere here do -

As I stated, there really is no "software" for the "AvantGo for
Blackberry" service. Literally, the download installs a weblink to your
BB desktop that simply launches the BB browser to go to a particular URL.

The functionality of the "AG for BB" service is not currently available
for the mBA server...and I doubt that it ever will be [at least not in
its *current* state...the guy who wrote that stuff doesn't even have
"engineer" in his .sig ;-) ]

The RIM client included in MBA is for the 957 devices and does synchronize
and provide offline functionality... for the 957 only the newer Java based
devices are not supported. The avantgo.com service is a live service for
blackberry users to view the avantgo content online using the RIM browser.

- I'm not looking for offline content or form submission or other MBA
application issues on the RIM, just online channel browsing live (web
edition stuff) -

-"...avantgo.com service is a live service for blackberry users to view the
avantgo content online using the RIM browser..." THIS IS NOT available
through the m-biz server, i.e. to browse via RIM browser content/channels
provided by M-biz server? -

- adding confusing, see info from M-Biz support below:
>>>>
Case/Subcase ID: XXXXXXX
Our BlackBerry support is minimal. You can see this by reading:
http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1027572
....There's a caveat mentioned, specifically, the RIM client supports Web

Dude, I don't know how much more clear I can be.

MBA - Supports RIM 957 ONLY.
AvantGo.com has an online portal that support more recent RIM devices.

MBA is software you buy
AvantGo.com is an advertising supported consumer portal.

They are not the same product, don't support the same devices (Notice that
on Avenge.com you can get a Nokia Series 60 client but cant for MBA)

well Enrico Dude, to contine to beat a dead snake, the quote:

"...There's a caveat mentioned, specifically, the [m-biz] RIM client
supports Web
Edition functionality only. AvantGo falls underneath this category..."

comes from a current open case issue from Sybase support, not an old
outdated web page - I find that clear as mud but leads me to believe there
is some functionality there; especially since the quote came from Sybase
support -

- so M-biz has limited functionality with old 857/957 BB devices and no one
at Sybase has any idea about the 'M-business Relay Service for Blackberry'
that is still installed by default with current version of M-biz - if it is
dead, why continue to sell it as part of M-biz product? -

- Dude, I'm not looking for a response here in this 'unofficial' forum; I'm
clear on that from your series of responses - I'm waiting for Sybase (in
another Case issue elsewhere) to respond why they package a dead-end client
with new versions of M-biz and to atleast provide documentation on what they
sell -

- there are lots of old news posts at iAny/Sybase about extending
functionality to RIM devices; aparently that old news never went anywhere -

- as Greg in the next post indicates, the only option seems to be to setup a
proxy to specifically address getting protected url (channel) content to BB
browsers -

Chris,

I completely agree with you that there is a lack of clear information
surrounding RIM support with both mBA and AvantGo.com. All of the
correct details are there, but the most important part (support of 857
and 957 only) is nothing more than a bullet point under "supported
devices". Again, back when much of this documentation was written the
857/957 was what people thought of when they said "RIM" (or "Blackberry").

I have forwarded your comments to mBA product management. I will be
asking them to address both product documentation as well as web pages.

There are efforts underway for supporting the newer RIM devices (as
rim.avantgo.com indicates), but unfortunately the technology of their
Java-based platform is radically different from their older DOS-based
platform. Getting mBA/AvantGo running on newer devices is not simply an
"upgrade" of the client. It would mean a complete rewrite and the RIM
platform is very limited on the client end. Much, MUCH work has to be
done on the server-side (that is, the BIS/BES side)...and that is a
fundamental shift from the architecture used to support win32/winCE/palm
and Symbian.

Hope this response helps to some degree,
greg.fenton

Actually no. There are three versions on MBA Web Edition, Web Edition Pro
and Application Edition. The 957 client only supports the functionality of
Web Edition. Again this has no relation at all to AvantGo.com (if you were
looking at features AvantGo.com actually is running App Edition).

Nope. Trust me, there is no hidden RIM functionality, I would know.

You could start (this assumes you have the 6.0 MBA version) with
http://myservername.here.com:8091/device/preview.jsp

I would choose the Palm 3 version knowing the limitations of the BB browser.

Enrico.

Yes, unfortunately that page's details has not been updated w.r.t. RIM
for quite some time. At the time it was written, the 957 was "current".

The problem is that you are looking for information on a product that
does not exist (i.e. MBA for Java-based RIM devices). Very few
companies document what they don't have products for.

One option you have, if you are looking to use the RIM browser, is
simply to point that browser directly at your channels source URLs (or
through some proxy mechanism). That is essentially what rim.avantgo.com is.

Hope this helps,

- maybe I mistated it by syaing 'sync' - I'm just looking to access info via
link to the M-biz server that has a channel to backend data - all real-time
data needed - no device store or cache or off-line reading or 2-way forms -
all wireless real time info -
