I'm getting an "Error accessing external object property
text" message when trying to assign a string with internal
quotes to a text column in a datastore. Just to test, I
tried using the escape character ~ with the quotes, but that
also does not work. ImportString doesn't seem to do
anything. Does anyone know how to assign to a datastore
column a string with internal quotes?

I tried SetItem - no success. I was, however, able to solve
the problem by essentially iterating over each character in
the string and inserting three tildes ("~~~") before each
quote character in the string. And just to clarify, it is
actually the text property of a datastore text column to
which I am assigning the string, not the text column itself.
Thanks for the suggestion, though!
