How are you loading the data?
Do the selects speed up after they have been run one time?
How much cache do you have?
Does the query plan change between the first time you issue the select
and the second?

Unfortunately there is no magic "go faster" switch. There are lots of
reasons for performance to vary so this will likely be a long series of
questions and answers

In 9.x versions we populate statistics during the load even if you are using
LOAD TABLE. In version 7.x the statistics are captured as you use the data
after loading it into the database.

I don't know "TQuery". Which API does it use to connect (ODBC, ESQL,
ADO.NET, ...) ?

> Do the selects speed up after they have been run one time?

The first time the query runs, the database cache is "cold". On
subsequent calls, the database is able to reuse pages that have been
loaded into the cache.

For v7.0.4 your best option is to run some queries to warm up the cache
when the database first starts up. That will avoid the performance
problem of first-time runs when your application connects.

In v9.0.1, there is the concept of "cache warming":

How are you capturing the plan?
Can you post the plan along with the query in question?

Are you setting the cache explicitly or is it growing dynamically? If
dynamically, does it change between the slow and fast executions

It doesn't? Are you sure you are looking at the query plan (not the
select statement) if you hit the plan tab (I think it was there in v7 -
so long ago :(
