We experienced a strange error today trying to get a customer up and
running. The server installation went ok, and they were able to run our
software, although the initial connection took longer than we expected. We
chalked it up to network latency (they're using wireless). But we couldn't
connect to the server using ARC. Neither a remote database connection, nor a
Management Utility connection was possible. Each request failed with a error
6097.

After checking the path and so forth, I changed the port number in the
server config from 0 to 6262, and that worked. Now ARC can connect, and our
software starts up faster.

What I want to know is what would cause this situation. I haven't seen it
with any other customer, and it seems strange to me that our software could
establish a connection, but not ARC.

If you don't specify the port in the server configuration there's no
guarantee that 6262 will be used. If you then want to connect to 6262
it might fail (since ADS might not listen to that port) - this is the
reason for 6097.

You misunderstand... I didn't specify a port number in my connection. 6262
is just a number I chose at random to assign to the port. The alias is
defined only for a path: \\server\apps\data\db.add for example. So it should
autodetect, right? What's curious to me is the different behavior between
our software and ARC - ARC wouldn't connect without having the port number
defined in the server config, even though the alias didn't specify a port.
(Our software uses ads.ini to determine how to connect, so the behavior
should be the same as ARC.)

I don't think so...6097 can _only_ happen if the server is specified by
IP:PORT (do you have an ads.ini file with LAN_IP/LAN_PORT?)

That's what I thought... Out standard installation doesn't set or specify
port numbers. When I set the port number in the configuration, I simply
thought of a number in the upper range, and tried it to see if it would
work. The number I chose had no significance. Is it possible that the
customer's networking software was specifying a port number? I don't know
much about networking, so I'm not sure if this is even a possibility.

This particular customer has had some problems with their network setup -
it's a combination of wireless and wired, and they seem to lose Internet
connectivity unexpectedly, and at first when we started working with them
they had trouble getting the workstations to communicate with the server.

I don't think so. Maybe they found LAN_IP/LAN_PORT in the help file and
just added the ads.ini file.
