Hi!
I have installed Sybase SQL Anywhere 7.04.3541. I have logged comunication
from and to the other pc client. I saw that in some case (I don't know why)
the pc with the database send some packet to the port 2298 to the other pc
client.

192.168.99.3,2638 -> 192.168.100.62,2298

As I have a firewall between this pc the comunication is broken 'cause port
2298 is not opened in pc client.
Could someone explain to me why Sybase use this port? What does it have to
comunicate?
Thanks in advance!
Nikka

The client doesn't require a specific port to run on, it will take whatever
port the OS assigns it. The client then tells the server what port it is
running on so the server can respond to that port. If you need the client to
run on a specific port, then you will need to include the MYIP parameter in
the connection string.

Thanks! It seems that aren't the right solution. I read something about
firewall. If the server send fragmented packet, the firewall stop it as they
could be DoS (Denial of Service).
Do you know if the server send this type of packet or send packet with some
interruption that are major of firewall tolerance?
Thanks in advance!
Nikka

What is your exact database server command line?
What is your exact client connection string?
What exact errors are the server and client reporting?

Database server command line:

"C:\WinUtil\Sybase\SQL Anywhere 7\win32\dbeng7.exe" @d:\dati\emigest.txt

in the d:\dati\emigest.txt there are this line
-c 50M
-ti 0
-tl 0
-x tcpip
d:\dati\emigest.db
-o d:\dati\emigest_log.log

The client connection are made by ODBC Source Name

ODBC --> Data Source Name: Emigest
Login --> UserID: dba
Password: sql
Database --> Server Name: Emigest
Network --> TCP/IP: host=192.168.99.3

In the server there aren't error. In the client the message is:

SetConnection [Sybase] [ODBC Driver] [Adaptive Server Anywhere] Unable to
connect to database server: Database server not running.

but if you retry software connects to database withouth problem.

In the firewall log there are this line

Jun 23 11:00:52 a3srvgwmio ipmon[78]: 11:00:52.059026 rl0 @0:13 b
192.168.99.3,2638 -> 192.168.100.62,2298 PR tcp len 20 40 -A IN
Jun 23 11:00:55 a3srvgwmio ipmon[78]: 11:00:55.013970 rl0 @0:13 b
192.168.99.3,2638 -> 192.168.100.62,2298 PR tcp len 20 40 -A IN
Jun 23 11:01:01 a3srvgwmio ipmon[78]: 11:01:01.030150 rl0 @0:13 b
192.168.99.3,2638 -> 192.168.100.62,2298 PR tcp len 20 40 -A IN

192.168.99.3 is server TCP/IP
192.168.100.62 is client TCP/IP
2638 is server port
2298 is client port

Letter "b" before server TCP/IP means blocked. It's happened as I wrote to
you when server send packet with some interruption.
Have you got any idea?
Nikka

You haven't added the MYIP parameter to the TCPIP connection link in the
ODBC datasource. Please test that then let us know if you are still seeing
problems.
