Hello,

I would like ASE to add at the table level a new settable option via the
SET builtin. This settable option would allow for data to be skipped
(nothing is done) that has a unique or primary key constraint on a set
columns of the table. I would also like this to be set permanently for a
table via the sp_chgattribute procedure.

SET DATA SKIP TABLE_A ON
go

There are many useful features of this. Including, giving replication
server the ability to perform nocorrection. Essentially the ASE server can
perform the nocorrection for the repserver. That is, repserver would run
SET DATA SKIP TABLE_A ON/OFF when establishing a connection or when
nocorrection is modified.

Thanks,
Ryan Putnam

Hi Ryan,

Just so I understand what you are trying to say... What you are asking
for would be an object (i.e. table) specific NOEXEC option? Or are you
talking more about a READONLY option with an optional silent mode that
would not raise errors when someone tried to write to the table?

set noexec my_table on
go

*OR*

set readonly my_table silent on
go

an intriguing idea...

Jason

Hello,

Actually, I would be looking for an automatic or system generated behind
the scenes where clause to be built for an insert into a table that
prevents insertion of duplicate records if the insert were to violate a
unique index or primary key constraint. In addition, there would not be
any errors generated with this option on if a duplicate insert would have
been tried with this option off.

Thanks,
Ryan Putnam

What you describe sounds like the 'ignore_dup_key' option. Would that
fullfill your requirement?

No... Because I do not want the insertion of the data to happen.

Ignore my previous response... I was thinking "allow_dup_row".

Yes, it would be sort of like the "ignore_dup_key" option, except that you
could set it with the set command. It would be something that you could
set as a dynamic statement for the table and not as a static creation
option for an index.

Thanks,
Ryan Putnam

In that case, you'll be interested to hear that there's a way to
dynamically toggle the 'ignore_dup_key' option in a unique index.
It'll be described in my new book on ASE which I'm currently working
on (due to be published soon -- details follow).

Hello,

I do not want to downplay your abilities or your effort you put into
investigating this, but I do not support hacks and I do not believe that
the company I work for would support a hacked solution as well.

Thanks,
Ryan Putnam

Hello,

Posted by SJ:
=============================
Hack?!? Come on Ryan, if there was ever a hack, it's the crap you've posted
on this forum whenever you have "free time" to "brainstorm" on your idiodic
crap you've been requesting for Adap Serv Ent. Please give us all a break
from your ego! ---

I don't think you are very logical SJ. A request for a change of
functionality is not hack. Again Rob, thank you for comments in regards to
my original question. I have not seen your code yet to do this, but I
suspect you are changing status bits. I will test this by writing a sp to
determine what unique indexes and primary key constraints exist for a
table.

Thanks,
Ryan Putnam
