I'm having problem executing PB NVO objects that I've published to EAServer.
I am able to execute simple single function calls, but anything more complex
seems to result in nothing happening. I am hoping to push a lot of SQL
operations from the client to the application server for better performance,
but I'm having problems figuring out the best way to break up the code with
possible Appeon limitations.

What are the limitations with deploying NVOs to EAServer and run them in an
Appeon application? From the EAServer NVO, can I call other server NVOs?
If so, how do I do that? I've tried using the TransactionServer, but that
doesn't seem to work.

Also, can the NVOs use inheritence even if you select the "Collapse Class
Hierarchy" option during deployment? I have not been able to call an
ancestor function.

Any immediate help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dave

I suggest you take a close research on the section Migration
FAQ and Building and migrating Distributed Applications.
Basic principles and limitations are described there.
As for the question “can the NVOs use inheritance even if
you select the "Collapse Class
Hierarchy" option during deployment”, the answer is
“Yes”. Theoretically the ancestor function can be called
without any problem. The reason of you failure may be
because the server NVO is not deployed correctly. You can
also turn to Appeon migration guide and Supported Features
Guide for Appeon Xelerator for help.

You can also buy Appeon Professional Service, then Appeon
senior engineer will help you improving the performance and
migration.

Regards
Sally Li

There has always been several large limitation to calling EAServer
components from Appeon. Can't pass by reference, can't pass an array and
some more. We developed a solution for a customer that allow them to call
retrieves and set the state automatically. Basically it flatten the request
multiple columns multiple rows into a string, parsed the string executed the
remote call, flatted the return and built the structure on client. It worked
really well. Fast and easy for the developers. Appeon helped by writing a
very important sting parsing dll for us to run on the client as well as
helping with the compression. It handles bundling multiple updates example
grab 6 dw, send to the server and update all in a logical transaction. You
can pass delta's or full state. Example your update might require all the
rows to validate, or you might need just the changes. Each dw, can define
how it wants to retireve and update. Retrieves are just like updates, you
can go out to the server and retrieve 'x' dw with one call.

I think I can find old code samples, might take a bit to get it working, but
if you can understand it, it will solve you problem.

Let me know if your interested and I will see if you can pull together the
code.

Thanks Dean, I'm definitely interested. I have the need to update usually
2-6 datawindows in one call. For now, to make it simple, I was going to
just update them one at a time, replacing the Update() on the client with
Get/Set Changes and Update() on the server to reduce the number of calls to
the server. That would at least reduce some of the network traffic. We
have a hosted application used by many clients around the US and a few
outside the US, so anything I can do to reduce the traffic, the faster it
will run. I do still need to support the regular client/server version as
well as the web version.

I had started to develop a solution to get around some of this yesterday,
but not being able to pass arrays pretty much ends that solution.

By the way, I remember seeing one or two of your presentations in Minnesota
when I used to work with Born. Good to see you're still kicking the Sybase
bucket around. You always had interesting techniques to learn from.

Thanks - DAVE

Let me know if you can get the zip attachment.

It's written in PB9. I'm sure you can migrate it. See if it make sense and
if you can get the demo running.

You should be able to run as client/server or Appeon. I just don't know if
this is the latest code or not.
