Hello

When I use Ads 8.1 client server with Win32 in a wireless, peer to peer
network, I am unable to connect unless the Windows Firewall is disabled.
Adding firewall exceptions for both ads.exe and the specific Delphi compiled
*.exe does no resolve the problem.

[ServerName] is the name of the machine on which the ads client and
Delphi compiled executable reside.
LAN_IP=172.16.16.10 is the address of the machine containing the
client and executable

I have tried defining a specific port such as LAN_PORT=2069 and also leaving
the LAN_PORT=0 for the default 6262.

Suggestions?

Got it

I have to go to the exceptions area of Win32 firewall and create a port
exception for UDP using the port configured in the Communications area of
the advantage database server configuration utility.

One interesting point is that if the Ads Server Port = 0 (default) and the
UDP exception is stated to be 6262 (the default Advantage value the
exception will not work. A specific (non-default) value must be placed in
the Ads Confinguration Utility and this value must be the same as the Win32
firewall exception.

From /usr/local/advantage/ads.conf:

; IP Port number for the Advantage communication socket
; Default = 0; Range 2000 - 65535
; Zero indicates that the next available socket should be used for IP
; communication with Advantage clients. If changing this setting verify
; no other processes are already using the port.
IP_PORT=0

So it appears that on Linux the default is not 6262 at all. I wish the
product would be consistent between OSs.

Hi Pete,

The default port for Advantage is 6262. If binding to port 6262 fails then
Advantage will just use the next available port. I will update that comment
to be more descriptive for the 9.0 release.

Hi Peter,

As Lance said, we can update the comment in the file to match the help file.
From the help (http://devzone.advantagedatabase.com/dz/webhelp/Advantage8.1/ads2/ip_port.htm)

Default = 0, which means that Advantage Database Server should attempt to
bind to the default port of 6262.
