Hi,

I’ve recently downloaded Sybase’s Workspace 1.7 Tryout.
I’d like to try it but couldn’t do it due to the
following error.

Java Virtual Machine Launcher
Could Not Find Main Class. Program will exit.

Similar problem has already been reported a few weeks ago
(look for the Workspace Startup Fails topic started
03/30/2007, I attached detailed error message in there).
There was no concrete answer.

I use Windows XP SP2. I reinstalled Workspace three times.
Is there any way, any workaround for this?

Thanks in advance
Damian

Damian,

We are not sure what is going on, but we have a few questions to help figure
it out:

1. In what directory did you install?

2. Please open a command window and CD to the eclipse directory located
where you installed WorkSpace. Once in that directory enter 'eclipse' and
then carraige return. Does eclipse startup (without workspace)?

3. What is the output from the 'set' command done in the command window?

thanks,
mike

Mike,

I've installed Workspace into the following directory:

E:\Sybase\WorkSpace

When tried to start Eclipse itself I received message that
No Java Virtual Machine was found (see error_eclipse.JPG). I
changed PATH variable and Eclipse works now, however
Workspace still does not (see error_workspace.JPG). The
first Workspace startup error did not change: 'Java Virtual
Machine Launcher Could Not Find Main Class. Program will
exit.'

Initial 'set' command output is as follows:

We made some progress. Here's the next steps:

1. Please verify you are running a proper OS. The following are supported:
o Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 or higher

o Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 or 2

2. Can you please send us your SybaseWorkSpace.bat file (it's in the Eclipse
folder)? We want to check how it is setting of JDK_ROOT.

3. Take a look at the files in the 'links' directory. What files are there?
Open them up with an editor and see if the appear to be pointing to the
right locations.

thanks,
mike

Hi,

1. I use XP SP2.

2. See attachment.

3. There are the following files inside the
E:\Sybase\WorkSpace\Eclipse\links directory:
sybase_workspace_1.5_database_components.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_database_management.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_doc.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_integration.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_modeling.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_services.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_tptp.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_webapp_development.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_wtp.link
sybase_workspace_1.6_avaki.link
sybase_workspace_1.6_mobile.link

I looked inside and all links look fine. All are written as
the example below
path=e:/Sybase/WorkSpace/sybase_workspace/web_development

except this two:
- sybase_workspace_1.5_modeling.link
- sybase_workspace_1.6_mobile.link

which look as follows (example)

path=e:\\Sybase\\WorkSpace\\sybase_workspace\\modeling

Thanks for helping me with this.
Damian

Hi,

The links look fine including the modeling and mobile.

My newsgroup reader deleted the attachment.

Can you please cut/paste into a posting? Or change the extension to
something that isn't as troubling as .bat.

thanks,
mike

Damian,

Your SybaseWorkSpace.bat file looks like it has an error with the
'ECLIPSE_ROOT' variable. Notice how your copy contains 'ìLIPSE_ROOT'.

Try replacing the contents with the following:

-----------------------------------------------------
@echo off

setlocal

set SWS_ROOT=E:\Sybase\WorkSpace

set JDK_ROOT=E:\Sybase\WorkSpace\JDK1.4.2_13

set ECLIPSE_ROOT=E:\Sybase\WorkSpace\Eclipse

set PATH=%JDK_ROOT%\bin;%PATH%;

cd /d "%ECLIPSE_ROOT%"

I am actually running into the exact same issue. I am
installed on XP SP2. I do have a prior Eclipse and JDK
installed. Eclipse does start up when I cd to my
C:/Sybase/Workspace/eclipse directory and type eclipse.
However, I get the exact same error that the main class
could not be found when I try to start it up. I have
already tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I suspect that
it is comflicting with something else on the machine.

Thanks,
Glen Hawkins

Try REM-ing out the start "Sybase WorkSpace" line in SybaseWorkSpace.bat and
replacing it with

1) "I changed PATH variable and Eclipse works now"
What change did you make to the PATH variable to get Eclipse to work?

2) Can you try making a backup of the files in your WorkSpace\Eclipse\links
folder and then remove all but the following
sybase_workspace_1.5_doc.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_integration.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_services.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_tptp.link
sybase_workspace_1.5_wtp.link
and try running WorkSpace\Eclipse\SybaseWorkSpace.bat again and see if you
still run into the same problem?

3) I'm sure its obvious, but can you confirm that
e:\Sybase\WorkSpace\JDK1.4.2_13\bin\javaw.exe
exists and that
e:\Sybase\WorkSpace\JDK1.4.2_13
looks at least visually to be a valid JDK installation?

Hi,

1) I added to my PATH variable the following path:
E:\Sybase\WorkSpace\JDK1.4.2_13\bin

Maybe this will be useful too; tryout clock is ticking since
I successfully started Eclipse (through eclipse.exe).

2) I did as you asked me to and still receive two errors:
“Java Virtual Machine Launcher. Could not find the main
class. Program will exit.” followed by the next one (see
attached picture).

3) I confirm that javaw.exe exists in the mentioned
directory, and everything looks (visually) as a valid JDK
installation.

Thanks
Damian

Hi Damian,

Here is my Hypotheses1:
1) Your SybaseWorkSpace.bat is corrupt.

Solution: Use the attached SybaseWorkSpace.bat and edit to point to your
environment.

Here is my Hypothesis2:
1) You have 2 JDKs - one outside and one inside Workspace
(E:\Sybase\WorkSpace\JDK1.4.2_13\)
2) Somehow, the JDK inside your E:\Sybase\WorkSpace\JDK1.4.2_13\ is bad.
3) Eclipse is using "outside JDK" from your PATH - and hence is fine.

Solution: Edit your SybaseWorkSpace.bat to make JDK point to your "outside
JDK".

-Patel.

Patel,

Although your SybaseWorkspace.bat looks the same as mine I tried it...
Workspace did not work.

I installed Workspace as one of the first applications (onto clean XP SP2)
so I do not believe there was another JDK installed somewhere.

I've just installed an extra JDK; JDK1.4.2_14, modified SybaseWorkspace.bat
accordingly but the app doesn't work :(.

I do not give up easily, however I'm feeling I lose my patience :(.

Do you know any place somewhere that would let me download and try Workspace
1.6?

Thanks for all help.

Damian

Huh, that's perplexing. Try REM-ing out the start "Sybase WorkSpace" line

David,

All four commands works.

a) starts as Sybase Workspace
b), c), d) starts as Eclipse

I assume if the a-version works I should not bother about the rest. Right?
Would you please explain more what are the differences between original
'start "Sybase WorkSpace"' and the a-version.

Thanks
Damian

I took out the -vm"%JDK_ROOT%"\bin\javaw.exe argument. I believe thats the
only difference from the 1.7 version of that command. My reason for doing
so was that when you ran eclipse.exe standalone it worked, which means it
must be able to find a JDK without being given a hint, and clearly didn't
like the one we were trying to tell it about. I'm glad that got it working
for you.
