I noticed that when workspace is open (in my case all day)
in the background sp_who gets executed. today, 7/10, it has
run over 12,314 times. why?

John,

The command "sp_who" is being executed by a WorkSpace's internal debug
handler thread to detect new connections and list them in the External
Clients view.

You can reduce the frequency of detection via the preferences. Go to
Window|Preferences|Sybase|SQL Debugger page and set "External client session
detection interval (ms)" value. Default is 5000 that means every 5 seconds.

Hope that helps.

Regards,
Samir
