I looked at several test cases, but all seem to have
different explanations for source/root cause and
resolution/workaround.

1) Is it Shared Memory fragmentation?
2) Is it a Swap Space issue?
3) Is ISM not supported on this series of OS / box (running
a SunOS 5.10 Generic_118833-03 sun4u sparc
SUNW,Sun-Fire-480R)?

What are your thoughts? Thank you.

Perhaps. But it doesn't look like it.

No.

No, all versions of Solaris support ISM by default.

The problem is that you have insufficient free
physical memory for the OS to allocation the
amount you requested as ISM so it falls back
to normal attach (where it uses swap). You
don't really want this since its slower than
ISM.

Run the command "ipcs -aim" to see what's allocated
currently in shared memory and over how many
fragments. Then run top or prstat to see how much
free memory remains. The should point you in the
right direction.
