Hi all,

For a not null string column in ORACLE DB, I have tried to update an empty
space using dwo. But it is not updating and showing error, "Cannot update
null values"

I think, Oracle is changing empty strings to null values.

Any round abouts to update empty strings in ORA.

TIA
Rammurali Krishnan B

Check your column and see if you have set the on the Edit tab the option
'empty string is null'.

There is also a setting on the DW column that tells it to store empty
strings as nulls. If you have a not null column and you want to put empty
strings in it then uncheck that property. Go to edit style and look for the
EmptyStringIsNull checkbox.

John

I didn't checked "Empty string is null" option. Also I have tried to update
a single space. But Oracle automatically converts the zero length strings to
null values and shows error.

Any help on this?

Thanks,

You can't store empty strings in an Oracle database. Period. It will
convert them to nulls.

The best you can do is make sure PB sends nulls so it doesn't get
confused in later updates as to what is in the column.

Leave the empty string is null option set.

Why are you trying to store empty strings?

You are correct in your thinking.
"Oracle Database treats a character value with a length of zero as null. "
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28286/sql_elements005.htm#sthref472

You'll have to save a single space or allow (and deal with) nulls.

Then you'll have to choose a value like TBD (common abbreviation for To Be
Determined) or allow nulls.

A varchar2() will indeed keep a space. If it doesn't, it implies that
somewhere a trim is being done. You would have to turn on database tracing
and step through the debugger to see if the single space gets changed to an
empty string.
