If I were to use the following function written as so:

my_report.SaveAs(my_xls_file, Excel!, TRUE)

How does PB know what version of Excel to use AND will this
function work if Excel is not even installed on the server
where this function is coded and executed? Does Excel need
to be installed on the server?

It uses the version you indicate. Excel alone is essentially Excel 7 (Excel
95), Excel5 saves in Excel 5 format, and Excel8 saves in Excel 97 format.
The Excel 97 format can be used for all later versions of Excel. The only
significant change since then has been in Excel 2007 where the row and
column limitations were essentially removed.

For whatever it's worth, the PowerBuilder help topic for
"SaveAsType DataWindow constant" states that the Excel!
value is considered obsolete and that we should "Use Excel8!
for current versions of Microsoft Excel"

it doesn't 'know', it saves it to a specific version. You have additional excel
choices depending on the version of PB you have.

excel does not need to be installed.

Excel is not required.

There are three file formats: Excel!, Excel5! and Excel8! as Bruce
described.
