Hi all,

We're currently looking into the Mobile Inspection Toolkit
(MIT)from iAnywhere which is a very impressive product
allowing the creation of dynamic surveys to go down to the
handheld via the M-Biz client.

However, we wish to integrate this with our product.

This means 2 things:

1) A Mobilink sync has to be performed sending data from the
ASA of the MIT to the backend system.

2) Our application which also runs on the M-Biz client, has
to be able to access the MIT survey and pass in the username
and the job number it relates to and also for it to be able
to invoke our application when done.

With 1):

a) As far as I can tell, there is no API available to
retrieve the contents of a survey in a structured format.
The developer needs to know exactly how MIT works and which
nested name/value tables/fields to iteratively/recursively
inspect. Is this correct?

b) There are no additional fields in the tables to allow for
custom marking of whether that field/value has been synched
to the backend system. Therefore, a series of database
changes need to be applied to manage when the contents of a
survey has been synched successfully to the backend. Is
this correct?

With 2):

a) If we pass information from one M-Biz app into the MIT
app, we need to customize the pages generated by the MIT
app. This then makes that page unchangeable (i.e. don't add
another field) as the page will then get regenerated. Is
this correct?

b) Whether we have a pod available or whether we change the
code in the MIT pages to connect to our database, we still
need to change MIT pages which causes the problem in a)
right?

As far as I can tell:

i) There are no hooks within the MIT to allow custom coding
to be included to do customised things without risking the
page being regenerated next time it is updated via the tool.
There is no clean separation between form and custom code.

ii) Because there is no API to the data within the MIT
database, we must completely understand the internal
workings of the MIT database and therefore if there are
major changes to how records relate to each other in future,
we're pretty much stuffed until we work out what's changed.

iii) There are no additional fields within the database or
function calls to retrieve data and to mark them as
synchronised for the data to be synched to another backend
system.

What is the best way to integrate our product with MIT?

Cheers,

Shao

I have passed on your questions to the right set of people. I will post back
once I get a response. I don't know enough about the Mobile Inspection
Toolkit to give authoritative answers.

Hi Dave,

Yes thanks. I got a detailed response from Keith. Thanks for your help on
this.

From what I understand of Keith's email these features of separation are in
the latest iteration but there is a difference between the version I am
using that iAnywhere consultants use for demoing and that which is sent out
to business partners as a framework. I am not sure but certainly I have
received 3 versions of the software from iAnywhere and no 2 versions have
the same directory structure.

I'll followup a few queries through Keith first.

Thanks for your responses on this Dave.

Cheers,

Shao
