I'm obtaining several id numbers defined as long datatypes
from child dropdown datawindows. I convert those values to
strings. They are then passed to a generic Retrieve that
has
all strings as retrieval arguments. I receive a return
value
of -1. I have used debug and verified that the variables
passed to Retrieve have my expected data.
However, I can use the development data window painter
and retrieve data by supplying those non-string values when
I
do a preview. I'm a relatively new PowerBuilder user; I
would
appreciate any advice. Thanks! I am making this change to
improve the performance of 22 reports that use the same
criteria
data windows.

Retrieve doesn't convert - the datatype of the argument in the call must
match the type that was declared for the retrieval argument.

Thanks. I made a modification and verified that all the
passed
variables for retrieve are defined as strings just like the
retrieval arguments, but it still doesn't work. In debug,
one example of a variable is "11929" (not 11929).

That sounds like the DW is expecting a "non-string" [i.e. number] as a
retrieval argument. Please verify the argument type.
Are you getting any message or just a -1 return?
