Hi,
First of all you can define groups and use appropriate function in
expression.
Or you can modify your query to provide this info (in Oracle search
for Analytical functions ...keywords: over, partition by)

Regards

Always let us know your PB version/build, Database you're using (if
relevant to your query) and connection method
(Native/Enterprise/ADO/JDBC etc...)

I do not understand the logic behind the compute. The "item" value of
"a" occurs three times, but the compute associated with it has values of
3, 2, and 2. Header H1 has three rows and a compute value of 3, but
Header H3 has three rows and a compute value of 2.

I'm guessing that English is not your first language. Please try to
explain in English and also in your native language.

Sorry, but you are not getting your point through in understandable
English - sorry, but it's true. Perhaps write it in native language
(explanation - complete of business problem), then have Google or Yahoo
translate it for you, and post here?

Usea computed field in the datawindow row and nested if( b,
t, f ) or case( x when a then b when c then d... else e)
statements.

If this is not enough help, provide more info.

I think it would be something like Sum (1 for all distinct header_column)

Not quite. I tried that yesterday and it gave me the number of distinct
values, not the number of times that each value repeated. I had
something close when I left work yesterday. Now that I know what I'm
after, I may be able to provide something.

That's exactly it. Most people don't realize that summing 1's is the same
as counting... ;)

Again, no. That expression gives you a result of '6' on every row.

To the OP:
Why can't you create a group? You don't have to put anything in the
group header or trailer and to the end user, it's completely invisible.

In testing, I called my two columns "mHeader" and "mItem". I created a
group on "mHeader" and added a computed field with this expression:
sum ( if ( getrow () = 0 , 1 , if ( mHeader = mHeader[-1] , 1 , 0 ) )
for group 1 ) + 1

OH - I was assuming he was grouping on the column he should be grouping on.
My bad...
