This is the first time I have tried to save a dw as a PDF. Heretofore, we've
saved as PSReport. I simply replaced PSReport! with PDF! in my script:

dw_1.SaveAs ("x.pdf", PDF!, TRUE)

This returns -1.

I checked postings to this forum and found the suggestion to set the
datawindow object's Data Export Format to PDF and Method to Distill!. Still
fails.

So I eliminated the script and just previewed the dw object in the dw
painter, selected File / Save Rows As..., selected "Save as type" as PDF and
clicked Save. After about 8 seconds, it reports "SaveRows As failed".

What am I missing?

Terry,

I guess you're telling me I need Ghost Script :) I searched the forum for
Ghost Script and also the PB 11.2 Help, but there's no mention. I Googled
and found many hits. What is the best source for Ghost Script?

In the compiled HTML help files, check out
Deploying Components and Application to .NET
Web Forms Targets
Chapter 5 Print, File, Mail Profile, and Theme Managers
Using the Web Forms Print Manager

You'll find everything you need near the end of that text, including a
link to the Ghostscript site for downloading.

Jason 'Bug',

Thanks for the information. I see Ghostscript is mentioned in the context of
'applications that are moving to the web'. This is applicable to those that
aren't web forms apps, right?

Hi Chris,

That link leads to the 8.61 version dated 2007-11-21, whereas if you follow
the link from the PowerBuilder Help to the http://www.ghostscript.com/awki
site and then select SourceForge, it takes you to where you can select the
8.62 version (2008-02-29 17:00) . Is there a problem with the 8.62 version?

Thanks,
Linda

Afterin installing the 8.62 version of Ghostscript (and rebooting), I still
get the error upon Save Rows As ...PDF in the DW painter (with Data Export =
PDF and Distill! Method).

Is there something else required? Could the printer / driver (RICOH Aficio
CL3500N PCL 5c) be a problem ?

(Is this an appropriate application of the Save As PDF option?)

The other piece of the puzzle is the need for a PostScript printer driver.
There is one included with PB, found in the C:\Program
Files\Sybase\Shared\PowerBuilder\drivers folder. You will need to deploy
that folder with the application. If the user has authority to install a
printer, PB will take care of it the first time they save as PDF. If not,
someone with authority will have to log on and install the printer.

Hi Linda;

I was not aware that 8.62 was officially released for MS-Windows. I am
running my systems on GS8.61 with PB 10.2.1, 10.5.2, 11.2 and now 11.5 beta
OK. The last time I looked, GS 8.62 was only GA for Unix - but that was a
month ago. I only download my GS's from SourceForge.

Update ... Just downloaded 8.62 from SF and installed this version.
Everything works great with PB 11.2 and 11.5 beta. So it must be in your
set-up configuration.

Jerry & Chris,

Chris, thanks for validating the 8.62 version of Ghostscript!

Following up on Jerry's suggestion, this morning our system administrator
assigned Administrator privileges to me.

The following files in my C:\Program
Files\Sybase\Shared\PowerBuilder\drivers folder:

ADIST5.INF

ADIST5.PPD

ADIST5CS.PPD

ADIST5CT.PPD

ADIST5J.PPD

ADIST5K.PPD

Are the above files exactly what should be present for PB to 'take care of
it the first time they save as PDF'?

What do you mean by 'take care of it'. Does it do everything under the
covers, or does it open the Printers and Faxes dialog?

After being assigned Administrator privileges, I previewed the DW in DW
Painter and did Save Rows As... PDF. Again, after about 13 seconds, it gave
the message "Save Rows As failed".

Since the automatic installation didn't work, we manually installed the
printer driver from the above folder, using Printers & Faxes / Add a Printer
/ Local Printer / LPT1 for Port.

After manually installing the PostScript printer driver, I previewed the DW
(in DW Painter and did Save Rows As... PDF. Again, after about 8 seconds, it
gave the message "Save Rows As failed".

We chose Acrobat Distiller when installing the PS printer. Is this a good
choice? Are there any other options that need to be set?

Thanks,

Linda

Your printer has to be named "Sybase DataWindow PS" and instead of "LPT1:"
you have to print to "FILE:".

You can use any other postscript printer, but make sure it is named "Sybase DataWindowPS"
and prints to "FILE:".

Arnd,

Thank you so much! Those were the final two pieces of the puzzle.

For anyone else who might be trying to do the same thing, I used the value
"Sybase DataWindow PS" (with a space between DataWindow and PS).

By the way, I found this documented under DataWindow .NET. Since we don't
use .NET, I wasn't familiar with the documentation available there, nor the
fact that it applies to non-.NET applications as well. A cross-reference to
the .NET discussion from the main documentation would be helpful.

Once again, thanks to everyone who helped!

Linda

Linda;

Yes, "Acrobat Distiller" is correct.

Make sure that you follow Arnd's note.
