I need help figuring out how to fix a datawindow that keeps
crashing. This is in Power Builder version 6.5.1 retrieving
data from a SQL database using a stored procedure. The
datawindow has the detail hidden and several summary fields
in the headers, main, group 2, and group 1. I have found
that if I don't hide the detail records the datawindow
doesn't cause a crash. I have applied the maintenance patch
for this version.

If my rusty memory serves, build 1299 of 6.5.1 was quite stable.
Can you be specific about the symptoms of the crash?
By "hide" do you mean setting the height of the detail band to 0? How about
1?
You don't have to have visual columns for the contents to be used in summary
computed fields, but it does help for testing.

Thanks for your help. The crash is a general protection
fault. And by hiding I do mean setting the height of the
detail band to 0. I tried 4 (it doesn't take 1, jumps in
intervals of 4 or 5) and it didn't crash but had the side
effect of having varying sized gaps between rows, this
because the number of detail rows combined into one summary
row varies between 1 and 10. As best as I can tell I have
build 444 of version 6.5.1. I downloaded and installed an
EBF/Patch dated in 1999, but I haven't seen a difference nor
have I been able to determine which build number it is. Can
you clarify how to get build 1299 for version 6.5.1?

I think you need to look at the properties of the DLLs in Windows Explorer
in C:\Program Files\Sybase\Shared\PowerBuilder. PB65.exe won't have a useful
version - it is a stub that just loads the others. IIRC the last release was
around 1358 - there doesn't seem to be a lot of choices in the download
list.
If upgrading to a supported version is not a possibility, make a copy and
try removing the visual columns and see if that fixes it.

The download "PowerBuilder - 6.5.1 Maintenance Release for Windows" dated 25
May 1999 is build 620. That is the latest build I see in the Download
EBF/Maintenace center. The only newer downloads are localized 'Y2K'
downloads. I would have to assume the Y2K fixes were included in the
standard build 620.

I remember that being a problem. Build 620 was the highest I ever used but I
don't remember if it corrected it or not.

You could manually change the band height to 1 by exporting the source,
editing it in Notepad and then importing it.

I used 1299 as well. I believe 1326 was the last EBF available, but I don't
know if you can still download that from the website. Those EBFs requires
that you have the MR 6.5.1 installed. I have a copy of 1299 if you can't
find it online.
The issue with not being able to set heights to 1 has to do with the fact
you have 'snap to grid' turned on. Disable that option and then you can set
the band height to any desired value.
Ultimately, you should seriously consider upgrading to a supported version.
11.2 is the latest release, with 11.5 in beta right now.
