I install a slave server on the same host with the master server in a VMWare
environment. According to KB #3783, it should be added into Afaria
Administrator. But I can not find where to add.

I checked the "channel\replication". There is the slave server in this
panel. So, I created a replication set and assign it replicated to the slave
server. It is successfully replicated to the slave server shown on the "Data
Views\Logs\Replication". Unfortunately, it failed when I changed the client
to connect to the slave server with the defaul port of "3007". I wonder
whether the configuration is right. Is there a guide could lead us?

When the slave server is installed, Afaria Administrator is also installed.
But can not open the the Administrator on the slave server. Can I see what
was replicated on the slave server. Or it is normal not to see the
replicated channels? And how to let the client connect to the slave server?

Jencheng,
Are you receiving any error messages on the Afaria Administrator running on
the Afaria Replication Server?

You can only add additional Server to an instance of the Administrator via
Access Policies. The link for Access Policies will ONLY show up for the
account that you specified for Access Policies during the Afaria
Administrator installation.

I recommend that you review the Installing Afaria 5.5 Guide
(http://frontline.sybase.com/support/fileDownload.aspx?ID=1277) for more
details about Access Policies and adding Servers to the Administrator via
Access Polices.

It may help to think of it this way: The Afaria Administrator is just a web
console that can manage one or more Afaria Servers. It is a separate
component from the Afaria Server, and can be installed along side the Server
or on it's own system.

Regarding connectivity for the Client, have you verified that the Afaria
Server service is running? Are you receiving any error messages?

Chris,

I think I can add a replication server now under
"Channels\Replication\Servers". And replicated channels to the replicate
server. Regarding to manage the replicate server, I would just like to make
sure the only management on the replicate server is through this window of
"replication sets" and "server". Please correct me if I am wrong.

Jencheng,
You can manage the Replication (Slave) Server through the Afaria
Administrator. Each Server has it's own configuration settings. Only
Channel Replications is handled via Channels - Replication pages.

Chris,

I did try to add a replicate server on server list of Access policies
window. But it always says not finding the server when testing the
connection. I installed the replicate server in a virtual machine on the
same host with the master server. I wonder it matters since I am able to
replicate channels to it. Maybe I should install the replicate server on
another machine.

Today, I also encountered a problem. The Afaria client on a WinCE device may
fail to sync with the server. The log showed "You are not assigned to this
channel". And then the client will connect again. It showed something like
"preparing channel listing". It would be pending for a while until timeout.
I also monitored the "Active Session" on Afaria Administrator. The message
was "Wait ListingsReady.dat". But can not find the .dat. Next time the
client starts to connect would be successful. The message of "Wait
LiastingReady.dat" do not appear. And it happens over and over again.
Althrough I check KB #1537, there is no usrprops.jar on the client. I am
still looking on it. Any comments?

Jencheng,
In regards the not being able to connect to the replication server. Are
you using the same user account to for the logon of the Afaria Server
service, and the Afaria Administrator Access Polices?

Here is a quick list of some of the things you will NOT be able to do if
you cannot connect to the Afaria Replication (Slave) Server using the Afaria
Administrator:
1) Afaria Alerts are specific to each Server (not global)
2) Configuring individual Server Properties - i.e. if you want to enable
Bandwidth Throttling (BWT), enable SSL, change Patch Manager storage
location for Patches, etc. These types of settings are per server.
3) If you want to monitor Active Sessions on the Replication Server

I will respond to you latter question about WinCE in the other post you have
for it.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

I use the same account to logon Afaria Server service and Afaria
Administrator. The account is "administrator" of the host which is the
account to install and configure Afaria service and Administrator. Is that a
problem for connecting to the replicate server?

According to what you said, it seems not a problem if I don't mind those
three things. It still can do channel synchronization, wright? Of course, I
hope we can have the complete experience of successful testing. Actually we
are preparing for a big project here which may grow up to thousands of users
in the next few years.

Do you think the replication server installed on a VMWare on the same host
machine with the master server would be a problem?

Jencheng,

Actually using the same user account for both the Afaria Server service
logon and the Afaria Administrator Access Polices is considered a best
practice. If you are using local accounts does the Administrator account on
both Master and Slave have the same password? OR if it is a domain account,
has it been granted local administrator privileges?

When you try to add the Server via Access Polices, are you receiving any
error messages in the Afaria Message logs? The test that is performed when
you add a Server is more than just a ping, but also verifies .NET security
and a few other key things. You might to try different values for the
address field - try using host name (NetBIOS name), FQDN, or actual IP
address, for address of the server.

If you are able to replicate channels I assume network connectivity is fine.
There should be no issue running both VMs on the same host machine. I do it
all the time in testing. There ARE more item that you will NOT be able to
do if you cannot correct the issue accessing the Replication (Slave)machine,
I only made a quick list of some key items that affect most implementations
of Afaria.

If you still cannot get it working and/or do not have any errors in the
Message Logs, you may want to consider opening an Afaria Technical Support
Case to further troubleshoot the issue.

Thanks,
Chris
