A CT is concerned about whitelisting function. Will Afaria6.0 enable that
function?

Jencheng,

Are you asking if a specific component of Afaria 6.0 will have whitelist
capabilities; such as Configuration Manager or Security Manager?

Here is a high level overview of a key changes in Afaria 6.0 Beta Channel
Architecture when compared to Afaria 5.x:
(NOTE: Since Afaria 6.0 is still BETA code, these features/functionality ARE
SUBJECT TO CHANGE! )

Afaria 6.0 Beta currently implements some significant architecture changes
that change the behaviors/methods that are used within Afar ia for Channel
Assignments and Channel Schedules when compared to Afaria 5.x versions. A
new concept for Afaria 6.0 Beta is the use of Profiles and Policies.
- User Groups are assigned to one or more Profiles.
- Profiles have one or more Monitors associated.
- Monitors are basically "triggers" that have you define an action to take
when a specified event occurs.
- Schedules are now a type of Monitor and they have to be associated to a
Profile in order to take affect (instead of directly with to a Channel.)
- All of the above components of the "Profile" are what effectively becomes
the Policy that is sent to the Client.

What does this means for Afaria 6.0 Beta? A Client must first be assigned to
a Profile in order to run anything Channel from the Afaria Server. In other
words, A Client has to be on the "WhiteList" in order to be able to
request a Channel from the Server. In Afaria 5.5 this is not the case, you
have to use Channel Assignments on all Channels to prevent "anonymous"
access. Otherwise in Afaria a.5x the Channels are open to anyone that can
connect to the Afaria Server.

I recommend that you subscribe to the Afaria 6.0 Beta program so that you
may download and preview Afaria 6.0 new features and functionality prior to
it's official release. http://frontline.sybase.com/support/beta.aspx

Another component of Afaria that is available in Afaria 5.5 is the new AV &
Firewall Manager which has whitelist features that related to network ports,
etc. Here are some links to additional information about this new add-on
component:

Chris

What I want to know is exactly configuration or security manger which can
restrict applications allowed to be run on the device. Not just hindles
network ports. Since we can do a blacklisting via configuration manager,
whitelisting would be another important feature in terms of "resource
consumption" from the customer's view.

Jencheng,
I scanned of the current Afaria 6.0 Beta documentation; I did not see
any mention of new white-listing features for Configuration Manager or
Security Manager.

Thanks,
Chris
