We use Subversion for source control, and I'm finding that Workspace is
incredibly slow when first opening the Workspace Navigator (when
presumably it's doing read operations). It takes minutes before I can
actually use Workspace.

The same interactions in a plain vanilla installation of Eclipse are
pretty quick, so I don't know if this is just a setting in Eclipse, or
some code that's been modified but it often makes the product
frustrating to use as I have to wait for an operation that should be
instantaneous. It takes many seconds just to save and close a versioned
file for example whilst it updates version info, which if I'm making
changes to many files simultaneously is pretty painful.

Any ideas why this might be happening?

Thanks

Gareth

Which Subversion plugin and version are you using with Workspace? Which
version of Eclipse are you using for the plain vanilla installation?

Eclipse 3.3 with subclipse 1.2.4
Workspace 2.0.1 with subclipse 1.2.4

When I save a change to a versioned file in Eclipse it's pretty
instantaneous, but when I do the same in Workspace all the version info
in the Workspace Navigator next to the files disappear for a few seconds
and then they reappear updated. During this time the workspace hangs.
I'm not sure why because I'm not committing or anything, just saving, so
it should need a trip to the server.

Do you have the option, Build Automatically on? (Preferences, general,
Workspace)
We are also using subversion, but I have not, since upgrading to WS 2.0,
installed the subversion plugin, and am doing my Source control outside
of eclipse (Using TortiseSVN), but in 1.7 I saw the same thing, and
turining off auto-build did help.

I have the same issues as Gareth. I'm using the latest Workspace build
(AFAIK), and I suppose the latest subclipse version (though I'm at home
now and can't check).

I also *believe* that I have the automatic build turned off.

Admittedly the SVN host is on a different continent, accessed through a
corporate VPN, but using Tortoise, etc. the accesses are pretty reasonable
- so I think there's something in Workspace that goes off and does various
things on a save (even an auto-save...) that don't appear necessary from
my POV.

No, I don't have auto-build on.

Any updates on this? I really like workspace but the fact that it can
hang for minutes at a time when communication with SVN is really
problematic. It's impossible to get into any kind of flow with work
because I keep having to wait for it to unfreeze.

Seconded. I've tried to disable as much auto-whatever, and decorations,
etc. and it is still really slow. I guess it doesn't help that we have
directories with several hundred files, but it should still be able to
handle this reasonably fast...

It's definitely doing something different to a standard Eclipse install.
We don't have this problem on Eclipse 3.1 through 3.3.2 with exactly
the same file set. Yet it feels like network delay. It's doesn't seem
to processor. I don't have the tools to profile this though.

Hi, All:
We looked into this issue and found it's a bug in WorkSpace. CR550472 was opened and will be fixed in the next release.
Thanks for your useful feedback!

I was told CR550472 was going to be fixed in Workspace 2.1 but it turns
out it isn't even fixed in 2.5 but is now scheduled for WS 3.0.

Is there a workaround in the meantime? It's driving me crazy and
ruining my productivity. I'm getting pretty frustrated to be honest.
Every single time I go to save a file I have to wait for workspace to do
its subversion operations which can take from 10 seconds up to several
minutes.

Thanks

Gareth

It's been two YEARS since this was raised now and still no news on a
fix. VERY FRUSTRATED.

Hi,

I've been experiencing this problem again with WS 2.1 - I upgraded today
to WS2.5 hoping it would be solved but it hasn't. I thought this bug
was fixed?

Thanks

Gareth

Hi, Gareth:

Currently the schedule is not yet committed. I will let you know once
there is any update

And as a Sybase customer, you can go through Sybase CS&S to open a use
case and escalate it for a WorkSpace 2.5 private patch.

I installed Ganymede this afternoon, with the latest free DTP files. The
subversion access is really fast - absolutely no comparison.

The free DTP also work reasonably well - one bug is that the following
code throws a syntax error:

if object_id('foo') is not null
drop table foo
go

whereas

if object_id('foo') is not null
begin
drop table foo
end
go

works. I guess it's in the handling of the "go" command separator - a
slight problem in the tokenizer/parser.
