Hi Folks,

We are about to get into trying to produce a CD that installs our
application (PB), database (SQL Anywhere 11) for the first time. It is a
redeveloped legacy application (came with legacy customers too :)) Any
pointers at all would be helpful. We are looking at install shield to
help with the installation, (any suggestions would be welcomed). Does
anyone know if there is a "Deploying A PB and SQl Anywhere Application"
document, I know that the individual products will give you pointers but
here's hoping. What do you all do for licensing, the standard seems to
be display and accept to continue an installation ? Does anyone do
anything different ? Is anyone using Virtualisation to provide demos
rather than a Cd ?

Any other suggestions brain dumps would be welcomed.

Thanks

We use InstallShield and Wise, but are trying to move to just InstallShield.

We don't actually do CDs, we just put the MSI together and distribute that
electronically.

Accept and continue for licensing. If you're interested in actually
tracking licensing, FlexLM is available from the same folks that now own
InstallShield (Acresso).

Our software has a demo mode. So people can get it, try it in demo mode,
and then if they decide to use it we can simply provide them with the info
they need use to get it to run in non-demo mode.

>>install shield
We use that too. There are other options however.

>>licensing
yes, display agreement and provide an opt out (stops the installation).
Installshield has some standard dialogs for this. Just put your agreement in a RTF document and point installshield to it.

>>Demos
Additional options for that...
Web based demos - Gotomeeting, Webex etc could be used.
flash recording
There is software that can hook into an application to provide demos, and then unlock it for full version.
Powerbuilder uses this kind of software for example

Take a look at Inno installer http://www.innosetup.com/isinfo.php
Freeware, and produces smaller files and does the actual installation faster
than InstallShield.

No experience with it. The ISV I used to work for switched from
InstallShield to Inno and was quite satisfied. They create several different
versions of each release, with different combinations of modules and
add-ons.

I use InnoSetup and I like it alot. I haven't used it but it has a Pascal
based scripting language. InnoSetup itself is written with Delphi. They have
newsgroups with a very involved user base.
