How do I insert an empty row in a dddw after I've retrieved
values? User wants to be able to select a row in the dddw
and then if that was a mistake and they don't really want
anything selected in the dddw, select the empty value. The
dddw after the retrieve has values in all rows so no way to
select an empty row or value. I feel like I should know how
to do this but I don't.

use variable that declare by datawindowchild and use Getchild() can do it.

datawindowchild ldwc_1

dw_1.GetChild("column1", ldwc_1)

Or you could add the row in the SQL
UNION
SELECT null, '' FROM dummy
