Dear all,

Is Replication Agent a separate install (a separate install
to Replication Server)? Meaning, a separate install in the
below senerios. The goal is to have Replication Server
installed on the Warm Standby machine (with an ASE instance
on the Warm Standby machine).

Warm Standby: Scenerio 01

Replication Server 12.6 - PRS (primary replication
server)
ASE 12.5.4 - PDS (primary dataserver)
ASE 12.5.4 - RDS (warm standby dataserver)

Warm Standby: Scenerio 02

Replication Server 15 - PRS (primary replication
server)
ASE 12.5.4 - PDS (primary dataserver)
ASE 12.5.4 - RDS (warm standby dataserver)

Warm Standby: Scenerio 03

Replication Server 12.6 - PRS (primary replication
server)
ASE 15.x - PDS (primary dataserver)
ASE 15.x - RDS (warm standby dataserver)

Warm Standby: Scenerio 04

Replication Server 15 - PRS (primary replication
server)
ASE 15.x - PDS (primary dataserver)
ASE 15.x - RDS (warm standby dataserver)

Or... is the Replication Agent a part of the ASE
installation? I mean, how do I create a Warm Standby for
both ASE 12.5.4 and ASE 15.x? Using either Replication
Server 12.6 or Replication Server 15?

Thank you,

Becky

If you were trying to replicate out of another RDBMS (eg, Oracle, MSSQL, DB2) then the repagent would be a standalone
binary product that would have to be installed/configured.

For replicating out of ASE 12.x/15.x the repagent is actually embedded in the ASE software, ie, there's nothing else you
need to install. In this situation you simply need to activate/enable the repagent code via the sp_config_rep_agent
stored proc.

As for setting up WS, the second volume of the Repserver Admin Guide has an entire chapter that addresses WS
setup/configuration. Generally speaking you use rs_init (OS utility) to configure your PDS/RDS/PRS for a WS setup.

NOTE: rs_init will take care of running sp_config_rep_agent to activate/enable the repagent in ASE.

Also note that while you can use RS 12.6 to replicate data from/to ASE 15, some ASE 15 features (eg, longer identifier
names) can't be replicated with RS 12.6. ("Duh, Mark!" ?)

There's nothing to upgrade re: the actual ASE 12.5.x repagent.

However, you do want to upgrade all ASE 12.5.x databases that are part of the replication system. You can do this with
the rs_init utility. (See the Configuration Guide for details on upgrading user databases.)

You'll also need to upgrade the repserver's RSSD. ("Duh, Mark!" ?) (Again, see the Configuration Guide for details on
upgrading the RSSD - this is actually part of the process for upgrading the repserver.)
