We currently use Merant products for achieving this (with Powergen to do
nightly builds) but due to a number of factors I am considering a change
and would welcome any suggestions. We are only a small team < 10 and in
one location so keep that in mind.

Thanks

I don't know if you saw the announcement from ECrane. See also:

http://paulhoran.pbdjmagazine.com/do_you_miss_objectcycle.htm

We're also a Merant shop, but I've been pressing to move to something
else. Dimensions is on the short list simply because it's easier to
migrate to it and we get a credit for our PVCS licenses.

Yes I saw the announcement and it peaked my interest tempered with the
trepidation of being an early adopter of such a critical piece of
infrastructure. It would cover the Source code side of things but I am
not sure how it would go integrating with an issues/bug/change request
tool.

I hear you on the easy to move which is an option but one of the reasons
for moving is the service we get from the sales and support departments
of the provider. Especially with regard to PowerBuilder
integration/issues (and from a versioning perspective with .pbls Ecrane
should be streets ahead here). But given Dimensions is from the same
crowd it's not my first choice. I see some of the other vendors have
conversion scripts for getting VM converted but to find an alternative
that covers exporting issues/bugs from PVCS Tracker is proving difficult
and obviouslu one thing I would rather not have to muddle through myself.

Well, a couple of thoughts:

1. Merant is Serena's legacy product and Dimensions is their going forward
product. I expect that they will support Dimensions better. Some of the
stuff I saw in the demos of it were significant improvements. For example,
if you want to determine what commands you need to use in a script to
perform version control actions, all you need to do is perform those same
actions in the IDE and it will show you the equivalent script command.
Certainly a lot easier than coding PCLI scripts with Merant.

2. My concern with the ECrane solution is that we have a lot of different
development tools, not just PowerBuilder. We need a version control system
that works with all of them, not one that is tailored for each IDE.

I would also be looking at workflow and grouping of resources beyond PB
involved in the issue - DDL, DML to populate new columns or convert existing
ones, stored procedures, pictures - and sequential dependencies. My previous
employer either did not find a satisfactory tool or was too cheap to
buy/license one; we rolled our own (in PB of course).

Other than MS Visual Studio and PowerBuilder, what are you using? Do they
use the SCC API?

My source control program is SCC API only ( no batch programs at this time )
and only implements the SCC API functions required by PowerBuilder.

I have developed a Source Control system myself. It has been in use by two
companies since 2005.

I have just started a rewrite of the Admin program and will be working on
other enhancements to the system once that is done. One big feature I plan
on is an integrated CR/Bug tracking app.

Eventually I will be selling it at a low price. Right now I can let you use
it for free. You can download it from here:

http://www.topwizprogramming.com/demo_downloads.html

It is written in PowerBuilder so you have to use a version different from
the PB you are using. So if you are using PB10, download WizSource Initial
Setup PB10.5. If you are using PB10.5, download WizSource Initial Setup
PB10. If you are using any other version of PB, it doesn't matter which one
you use. It has been tested with PB8 and above as well as PocketBuilder. It
currently does not work with MS Visual Studio. Only the SCC API functions
used by PB have been coded.

The system uses a SQL database for it's repository. The install includes SQL
Anywhere 9 Runtime Edition for the demo database. In addition to SQL
Anywhere, it supports Sybase ASE, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle.

There isn't a help file for the Admin program so I'll have to answer
questions via email. The SCC interface does have a help file.
