What have you used to create help files for your applications? I need
something that is free or really cheap. It has to create help files that
work on Vista and something that can be used or opened from PowerBuilder.

Thanks,

Brad

I'm using HelpScribble to create chm help files. It's not free but really
easy to use. The help can be opened with the api call HTMLHelp in the DLL
hhctrl.ocx.
However did you consider an online help? As most of the people are connected
to the internet anyway you could store the help files as html pages on your
server. For offline people you could create a PDF.

Arthur

I'll take a look at HelpScribble. Thanks.

I did consider the online approach by I want it to be somewhat
integrated into my application (e.g. I have help buttons on nearly all
the windows). I also want to have things like search. This can be done
with online documentation but I want it quick.

Thanks again,

Brad

I use Help and Manual; I looked at lot of options prior to buying this.
Its not free, but (IMO) resonable price. It has a lot of features, and even has check out options for multiple authors

It's not exactly a model of perfection, but I am heading toward a
static website for Help simply because Google can be used to search;
e.g.:...

No, wait, it's worth blogging about <g>...

Brad,

You might want to check this link out...

http://www.thefreecountry.com/programming/helpauthoring.shtml

Got some free options you can look at.

Personally I found a copy of RoboHelp on Ebay that I bought cheap. Since it
only uses up to Windows 2000, I put RoboHelp on a dedicated Windows 2000
machine that has Word 2000 on it. I use it just for compiling help files.

HTH.

I have been experimenting with Microsoft's HTML Help
Workshop product. For building compiled HTML HELP files, it
seems pretty easy to use. And it is a free download. You
still need an HTML editor, but otherwise it works very
nicely. The compiled HTML file can be run independently of
any program.

One problem, however - Hooking it up to the ShowHelp
function in PB gives trouble. The PB documentation says
ShowHelp should work with compiled HTML files (.chm) but it
just doesn't seem to.

It should only take, for example, a statement of the form:
ShowHelp(string HelpFilePathAndName, Index!) to show the
table of contents tree of a compiled HTML file. Instead it
returns -1, indicating failure.

Anyone tried this?

Hi,

I've used HELLLP! for years.
It's basically a MS-Word macro. It covered all my needs for creating
quite complicated help files ().
You can get a trial version from http://www.guysoftware.com/helllp.html
and at 39$ you get good value for your money.
You still need the ms-help-workshop though, but that's a free download I
think.

Regards,

Wim

Does the help file produced work on Vista? It looks like it only creates
the older style help files.

Brad,

I would think that the output produced by this product would have no problem
running on Vista, as long as you install the WinHelp engine which wasn't
released with Vista.

Since posting the last item about using compiled HTML HELP
files, in which I mentioned a problem with hooking them up
to PB, I have since resolved the problem (Which no one
offered any comment on!!!!)
In any case, it seems to work quite nicely now. So I will
recommend compiled HTML HELP using the MS HELP Workshop
a) it is free
b) it puts all your HTML pages which can be built separately
into a single compiled file
c) PB can access any page in the file via ShowHelp, which
can be reached thru the index entries
d) it should work in VISTA because MS is dropping the
inclusion of the runtime for compiled WORD files in favour
of compiled HTML files. The runtime for HTML compiled help,
is, I believe included with VISTA.
