My application is running PB11.1 and Oracle 10g. I have a
select statement which retrieves data within Toad without
problem. But it returns the error of 'Numeric value out of
range' when I run it from application. I try to use
'retrieve' within datawindow but the option is disabled. I
realize the statement includes lots of columns with '-1'and
' ' which looks like:

select empId, empName, -1,-1,-1, '','',''
from emptable

Note that there are 88 columns of '-1' and 22 of '' and
total is 114.

Can anyone please help me answer the following:
1) what does the error mean 'Numeric value out of range'?
2) is there anything wrong with the select statement?
3) why the DW retrieve function is disable? how to enable
it?

Many thanks for your help!

Nancy

Have you tried addig aliasses for those columns?
Maybe problem is when PB tries to assign name to those columns?

For test I'd try to find a magic number of columns where this isue
starts appearing and then add one column with alias, to find out if it's
a problem.

This is just a sugestion...

Numeric Value out of Range is often indicative of a datatype issue (i.e. you
are trying to put a number into a datatype that cannot accept that value).

You can certainly have more than 114 columns in a datawindow, so I don't
think there's anything truly wrong with the statement. One thing you may
try is (as Fisher noted), alias your columns such as:

Select empId,
empName,
-1 as Option1,
-1 as Option2,
'' as Field1,
'' as Field2
FROM emptable;

You can also do an "Edit Source" on the datawindow and verify the Data Types
being used for the -1 values (Should be numeric). This may differ if you are
using an ODBC driver instead of the native Oracle driver. This could be one
way in which you may determine why the "Numeric Value out of Range" issue is
occurring. You mentioned you were running the application when getting
this, is it happening during the Retrieve, or are you doing some "Getitem"
or "Setitem" stuff in which you may be using an incorrect datatyped
variable?

One thing you can try is a free tool like SQLTools (Which is for Oracle
only) to test the query. It has an advantage over PowerBuilder in that it
will tell you what line is causing the problem. Just do a Google search for
SQLTools and you should find it.

As for the datawindow retrieve function being disabled, I'm assuming you are
talking about the Retrieve button or Menu option in the Datawindow Painter?
This could be due to the layout of your painter. If the Preview area is not
open, the Retrieve will be disabled. To fix this you can go into the View
menu, select Layouts, and then select (Default). This will bring the Preview
window up, and should enable your Retrieve button in the painter.

Hopefully some of these ideas prove helpful.

Thank you so much for your great help. My issues have been
successfully resolved. One major thing to keep my IT job so
enjoyable is seeing people like you who are willing to share
and helpful.

Hi Dave,

The problem was there were 88 columns with -1 and 22 columns
with ' ' in the select statement while it supposed should be
68 columns of -1. I was struggling because the client told
me the issue happens after migration from PB6.5 to 11.1.
It's hard for me to believe the additional 20 columns were
added by datawindow itself. How it sounds to you?
