Hi all

I know this has been asked before and I suspect that it's
not possible but I would really like to be able to set a
datawindows background to transparent.

We are looking to migrate to PB11.5 to use the new gradient
backgrounds but as most of our application uses several dw's
on each tabpage simply setting each dw's background to
gradient won't work. In fact it will look like a patch work
quilt.

We were hoping to create an external dw with the gradient
and place it on all the tabpages. That way the gradient
would fill the whole tabpage no matter how many dw's we had
on it.

Sadly the lack of a transparent option means we can't do
this. In fact the whole datawindow gradient support seems to
fall a bit short.

Any help or guidance in this matter would be much
appreciated.

Thanks
Graeme

I agree... It's easy to have the "container" controls (window, user object,
tabpage, etc) simulate a gradient background of their own by using a
datawindow with a gradient background and resizing appropriately. I have an
example of this posted to my blog. The problem is that the datawindow
control itself (not the datawindow object) doesn't allow transparent
background. So even with a transparent background in the dw object, you're
only seeing through to the dw control - not all the way through to the
window or user object surface.

I think the real answer would be to allow for transparency in all the
containers - datawindow control, as well as window, user object, and
tabpage.

Thanks for your reply Paul.

Transparency in all objects would be great but I can't see
Sybase doing it. To be honest the whole UI is getting very
dated. The XP look and feel was a great start in PB10.5 but
with the likes Vista and Office 2007 we are being left
behind.

I did try the Codejock Ribbon and although it looks great it
it would mean a major rework of our application. Not to
mention that the amount of code needed was huge.

Perhaps PB12 can bring something new.

PB12 *is* implementing the WPF Workshop. You should have the visual
freedom of WPF and the power of PowerBuilder and DataWindow. I can't
wait to get my hands on it and play around!

Don't we already have the power of WPF and the DataWindow with
DataWindow.NET? Hopefully the PB implementation does indeed provide access
to all the controls you have available in Visual Studio, otherwise we may
still be behind... Also, will the DataWindow itself be able to use WPF
controls (i.e. can the DataWindow be made to look like a modern Vista app or
will you have a nice modern looking application wrapped around the same old
DataWindow?

The current DataWindow.NET is *not* rendered using WPF, as far as I
know. My understanding is that the PB12 DataWindow is being completely
rewritten. Part of the reason for that is to provide the ability to
create 100% managed code. Another part is to provide WPF rendering. My
memory is fuzzy, but I *think* I remember them saying that you would be
able to place external components on the DataWindow. Dave or John can
correct me if I'm wrong.

Our current demos do contain a DW object that has base WPF controls on it.
How would you want to use this? Ideas?
