i have an ubuntu 6.10 server hosting an ASA 9 network
server(version 9.0.2.3397). the asa 9 network client on xp
is connecting without problem. my problem is that ASA 6 on
xp cannot connect into the server returning the error msg
"Database server not running", i am using ASA 6.0.4.3799
which is the latest patch.

i use this command to start the ASA server :
dbsrv9 -ud -n xpdbsrv1-c 1G -ch 1G -sb 0 -pc -x tcpip
/database/mfx.db -n mfx "

i have try using dbisql on ASA6 to connect to the server but
the same result come out. while ASA9 can connect
sucessfully.
dbisql -c
"eng=xpdbsrv1;dbn=mfx;links=tcpip(IP=192.168.1.3)"

this problem have bugging me for few week now.. and i still
cannot find the solutions for this problem.. can any1 please
help me to solve this problem or can give me other solution
to allow me to connect using ASA6 since i am still using an
app that cant operate without connecting to server using
ASA6.. thanks

Wow, That's a *very* old version. All I can suggest is that you turn on
tracing of the network stuff to see if you can learn anything.

You'll need to look at the help file to confirm, but if I recall correctly
it will be the -Z switch on the server and something like log= on the client

Since v9 works then it is very likely there is some bug/incompatability that
was fixed in the intervening 7 years.

If you can figure out the actual error you may be able to use some
combination of network parameters to get past the problem.

In addition to Steve's suggestions, please try using ASA 6's
dbisqlc instead of dbisql.

Also, in your connection string you are specifying the IP
address of 192.168.1.3 - is that the IP of the machine running
the server or the client? It should be the IP of the server
computer). Note: if the client and server are both on the
same subnet, then you shouldn't need to specify the IP.
If the two machines are on different subnets (or you just
want to always give the IP), you could also try adding
broadcast=no to the connection string (this will cause the
client to not send a UDP packet to the server to verify
that the server running on the computer is the right one.

Finally, you may want to check the server's console messages
to see what port the database server is listening to.
The default port is 2638, but sometime after v6 (can't remember
exactly which version), the server was enhanced to detect that
port 2638 was in use and would automatically pick another port.
(if this happens, the database server's -z output will tell
you which port it chose to use). At the same time that this
enhancement was made, the client s/w was also enhanced so that
it was able to determine which port it needed to use to connect
to the server (this is done through the exchanged udp packets).
So if the server is picking a different port (other than the
default 2638), then the v6 client will need to be told which
port it needs to use. If this is the case, add port=<num>
to you connection string.
e.g. if the server reports that it is listening to port 49000,
then try the connection string
-c "eng=xpdbsrv1;dbn=mfx;links=tcpip(IP=192.168.1.3;port=49000)"
